In 1779, the Revolutionary War continued. In support of the North American colonies, Spain declared war on England. Fort Nashborough, later to become Nashville, Tennessee, was founded by James Robertson.

Notable births in 1779 included naval officer Stephen Decatur, lexicographer Peter Mark Roget, lawyer and lyricist Francis Scott Key, and painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Notable deaths included surveyor Jeremiah Dixon and explorer Captain James Cook.
