The 2006 Shelby County time capsule replaced the 1906 Shelby County time capsule which was opened on June 17, 2006. Because the previous one had been damaged by moisture, Bobby Joe Seales, president of the Shelby County Historical Society in charge of preparations, committed to a state-of-the-art moisture barrier in the new capsule.

The new capsule was placed behind a new cornerstone on June 24, 2006 at the old Shelby County Courthouse in Columbiana. The ceremony was carried out by Probate Judge Patricia Yeager Fuhrmeister and representatives of the Shelby County Masonic Lodge.

The contents of the capsule include contemporary coins, a postcard, a bronze medal of President George W. Bush, a new Masonic manual, a copy of the Shelby County Reporter, a postcard and a bible.
