20th Street South (originally East Avenue) in Homewood is an approximately one-tenth-mile, north-south road that runs north from 28th Avenue South to a cul-de-sac. It runs parallel to the south end of the Elton B. Stephens Expressway, just west of the Expressway.

Prior to the completion of the Elton B. Stephens Expressway, East Avenue was the portion of what is now called Independence Drive north of 29th Avenue South, which Montgomery Highway originally followed over to 18th Street South. The road was renamed from East Avenue to 20th Street during the 1940s when Homewood renamed several streets to continue Birmingham's street numbering system. When the Expressway was constructed in the 1960s, it was run just east of the northern end of 20th Street, becoming the main route and linking directly to the existing road at 28th Avenue. This left an approximately one-block section of 20th Street north of 28th Avenue largely intact while the block between 28th and 29th became part of Montgomery Highway (later named Independence Drive).
