The A. O. Lane residence was a two-story frame house constructed by attorney and real estate investor A. O. Lane and his wife, Minne in the 1870s on the northeast corner of 3rd Avenue North and 23rd Street. It was described in 1886 as "a happy home, neat, roomy and orderly."

The Lanes moved to a large new mansion at 8th Avenue North and 19th Street in 1887.
