The Alabama Slammers were a professional women's football team playing as a part of the Women's American Football League during the 2001–2002 season. The team played its home games at Guy Tucker Field and at Max Luther Field in Huntsville, and was owned by Lloyd Leslie with Brian Watson serving as head coach. The team and league folded at the conclusion of the inaugural season.
History
The Slammers were born on August 15, 2001 after the Women's American Football League granted a team license to the Alabama Slammers. On August 25, open tryouts for the team were held at McClendon Park. The team consisted of a 25 women roster with players coming from throughout Alabama. Although this was a professional league, all players were responsible for selling T-shirts and sponsorships to cover costs.
The initial home games were played in Huntsville before Guy Tucker Field was secured as a venue later that season. The championship World Bowl was held on February 9, 2002, with the California Quakes winning the league championship.
The team would play their lone season in the Central Division of the Atlantic Conference. Other teams in the conference included:
