The Birmingham Area Chapter of Alabama Volunteers in Corrections (AVIC) was an entity formed in 1979 and registered in Alabama as a domestic non-profit corporation.

AVIC provided educational programs to inmates at various correctional facilities in the state of Alabama from 1977-2000 and also provided assistance to inmates after their release with job searches, educational opportunities, and counseling services. One of the primary goals of the educational programs was to provide inmates with skills that would help them obtain jobs once they were released from prison and to give them opportunities to earn their GED. In addition to teaching programs, AVIC volunteers also coordinated efforts to establish libraries in various correctional facilities that gave inmates access to additional learning resources.

Another service that AVIC provided was to help former inmates find housing after their release. Volunteers worked closely with other ministries, such as Shepherd's Fold, to help the former inmates find housing, transportation, and jobs to reestablish themselves into society. Prison officials stated on many occasions that AVIC volunteers were considered an integral part of the correctional process and the rehabilitation and reintegration process to help former inmates return to society.

AVIC was associated with the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, but obtained funding from a variety of businesses, charitable organizations and religious denominations. Their offices were located in McCoy United Methodist Church.
