Birmingham Area Educational TV Association

The Birmingham Area Educational TV Association was a partnership between Jefferson County Schools and Birmingham City Schools which was created in 1954 to help provide programming for the statewide network of television stations planned by the Alabama Education Television Commission (AETC), the first such state commission created under federal laws authorizing funding for such projects. The commission planned to cover the state with three broadcast towers, Channel 7 on Mount Cheaha, Channel 10 in Birmingham, and Channel 2 in Andalusia, all of which would provide the same program schedule. Under a grant from the AETC the Association was advised by Rudy Bretz.

Birmingham schools, led by Evelyn Walker, were already participating in production of educational programs for WBRC-TV and WABT-TV, including "I Pick a Career", "How to Do It", and '"Look and Learn". Those programs were expected to continue as new shows were developed for the AETC's network.
