Boules sports at the 2022 World Games
The boules sports competition at the 2022 World Games took place on July 12 and July 13 at Bessie Estell Park. The two disciplines within boules sports at the event were lyonnaise and pétanque. Lyonnaise (or bocce volo) has been an event since the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan, and the Birmingham edition marked the sixth time lyonnaise was included as a regular event at the World Games. Pétanque has been an event since the 1985 World Games in London, United Kingdom, and the Birmingham edition marked the tenth time pétanque was included as a regular event at the World Games.
In pétanque the objective is to score points by having boules closer to the target than the opponent after all boules have been thrown. This is achieved by throwing or rolling boules closer to the small target ball, officially called a jack, or by hitting the opponents' boules away from the target, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground.
In lyonnaise, the balls are thrown overhand and are metal. In standard bocce, the wooden or plastic balls are tossed underhand and rolled.
