Oxmoor Valley

What exactly constitutes Oxmoor Valley? I thought I knew, but when I started looking at maps (see 7.5 min Bessemer & B'ham South from 1959, 15 min Bessemer), the area I was thinking of appears just to be more of Shades Valley, according to the labels. So is Oxmoor Valley a real valley -- perhaps where Shades Creek runs between Little Shades Mountain and Shades Mountain -- or is it just a name for the region of Shades Valley around Oxmoor that has historically seen less development? --Lkseitz 06:34, 21 May 2008 (PDT)

  • Geographically I believe it refers to the semi-enclosed valley formed between the ridge of Red Mountain and the sand ridge on its southeast slope where the Oxmoor community (and Sand Ridge neighborhood) are. The sand ridge is most pronounced as a division between Oxmoor Road and Muscoda (with peaks at "Little Shades Mountain" and "Muscoda Mountain"). It may also be used to distinguish the sections annexed by Birmingham. --Dystopos 07:11, 21 May 2008 (PDT)
