Dale Watson

Kenneth Dale Watson (born October 7, 1962 in Birmingham) is a country singer, guitarist and songwriter based in Austin, Texas. His alternative, throwback style has won praise from critics, especially in alt-country circles. Annual tours of Europe have been accompanied by awards in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain.

Born in Birmingham, Watson moved to Houston, Texas as a teenager as he was beginning a music career playing honky tonks and Houston bars. In 1988 he moved to Los Angeles to join the house pand at the Palomino Club. Later he moved to Nashville and wrote songs for the Garry Morris publishing company. In the early 1990s he moved again to Austin and formed a band called "The Lone Stars" to back him at clubs and in his first albums for Hightone records.

Watson's fiance Terri Herbert died in a fatal car accident in September 2000, sending the singer into a deep drug-fueled depression. He checked himself into a mental institution and, after recovering, returned to music, recording the mournful Every Song I Write Is For You. Documentary filmmaker Zalman King explored Watson's recovery in "Crazy Again" (2006), which premiered at South by Southwest. Watson also starred in King's bio-pic "Austin Angel" (2007).

During a hiatus from music in 2004 he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to be closer to his daughters. He returned to Austin in July 2006 and resumed playing regular gigs, including Sunday nights at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon and a Monday night residence at The Continental Club. He is also a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry.
