Darryl's 1871

Darryl's 1871 was a theme-restaurant located at 150 Green Springs Highway. It was part of a North Carolina-based chain founded in 1970 by Thad Eure and Darryl Davis. Their first restaurant was at 1906 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, and they added "1906" to the name and adopted a historical theme. As the concept spread to other cities, significant dates for those locations were chosen. The Birmingham location, therefore, reflected the city's founding date of 1871.

The chain was sold to General Mills, Inc. in 1980, then to W. R. Grace in 1985 where it was linked with the Houlihan's Old Place and El Torita Mexican Restaurant chains under the Gilber-Robinson subsidiary. The subsidiary was acquired in a leveraged buyout in 1989 and went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization a year later. In 1998 Dan Scoggin led a group that took over what was by then known as the Houlihan Restaurant Group, which itself filed for Chapter 11 in 2000. The chain, which once had 36 locations, dwindled down to just one location in Greensboro, North Carolina in 2003. That restaurant, now called Darryl's Wood Fired Grill, was purchased by developer Marty Kotis in 2010.

Since its closing, the former Darry'ls building has housed a mattress store, the Original Steakhouse & Sports Theater, and Wing Out Music & Sports Theater. That business was closed down in 2010 by the city of Homewood as a public nuisance.
