David Garrett

David R. Garrett (born January 5, 1964 in Birmingham) is a law librarian, theater actor, director, playwright and artist.

Garrett graduated from Erwin High School in 1982 and earned a bachelor of arts in English at Auburn University while performing with the Auburn University Singers. He has worked for the Southern Environmental Law Center and, since 2001, has served as law librarian for Maynard, Cooper & Gale.

Garrett has worked with Town & Gown Theatre, Terrific New Theatre, the Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Birmingham Festival Theatre, ACTA Theatre, and the Painted Rock Players. He spent four years as artistic director at the Levite Jewish Community Center. As a playwright, he has authored "Covering Dish", "Eternal Flames", "The Way We Were When A Star Was Born", "One Little Word", "Pushing Buttons," and "O Holy Knight". He and his twin brother Don co-authored the musicals "Off Broadway" and "Lots of Life."

Garrett is also a painter and photographer. He documented the faces of the Birmingham theater community for the exhibit Stars Fell On Alabama: Past and Present. He was also one of the founders of the Birmingham Shout film festival.

Garrett lives in a cottage in Irondale's historic district. The house was used in the 2010 Hunter Films production Lifted.
