Fredrick James Mullis Jr (born June 2, 1993 in Troy, Pike County) is a singer and songwriter known professionally as Early James.

Mullis was raised in Troy and was given a guitar for Christmas by his aunt at age 15. He took to writing songs right away, largely influenced by James Taylor and Johnny Cash. He moved to Birmingham around 2014 to work as a professional musician. He soon met bassist Adrian Marmolejo who began performing with him as "Early James and the Latest." Working together they incorporated various strains of blues, folk, rock and classic country into their sound. James' lyrics are described as "sardonic," alternating between humor and depression.

James' debut album, Singing for My Supper was released in March 2020. It was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and released jointly on the Nonesuch and Easy Eye Sound labels.
