Enoch Alldredge

Enoch Alldredge (born May 16, 1807 in Giles County, Tennessee; died November 22, 1879 in Brooksville) was a Confederate officer and longtime Blount County representative and senator in the Alabama State Legislature.

Enoch was the oldest son of Andrew Alldredge and the former Leah Chaney. His parents settled in Blount County in 1816 and he attended school in the area. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1828 and served as a private under Captain Musgrove in Florida during the Creek Indian War. On November 18, 1826 he married the former Amelia Pace and they had thirteen children.

In 1836 Alldredge was elected to the Alabama State House of Representatives and served two one-year terms. He returned to the house in 1843 and served as Blount County's lone representative from 1845 through 1850. In 1851 he was elected to the Alabama State Senate for one term. He served another term in the House from 1853-1854, and another five terms from 1859 to 1862.

In that year, Alldredge raised a company of soldiers for the Confederacy, including his seven sons. He was commissioned a Major in the 47th Alabama Infantry. He commanded the regiment at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in August of that year, but was badly wounded by a bullet in his thigh and forced to return home to his farm. His son Jesse took over his command for the duration of the Civil War.

Alldredge returned to the state House of Representatives for two terms between 1874 and 1876 before retiring from public life. He served as a deacon and clerk at Salem Primitive Baptist Church for most of his life. He died in 1879 and was buried alongside his wife at the Alldredge Family Cemetery in Brooksville.
