Garrett, Phelan & Underwood

Garrett, Phelan & Underwood (later Garrett & Underwood) was a law firm formed by James J. Garrett and Alabama Secretary of State Ellis Phelan in 1882. Oscar Underwood joined the firm in 1884, but left the city a year later to serve in the 54th United States Congress. Phelan left the firm in 1885 to move with his wife to Waterbury, Connecticut.

The firm's offices were located in the National Bank Building, and were noted for housing a full set of Jefferson County's abstracts of the title to all conveyances and court records.
