Greater St John Baptist Church

Greater St John Baptist Church, formerly known as Second Baptist Church, St John Baptist Church and St John Missionary Baptist Church, is a large church located at 2401 Carlos Avenue in the in the Powderly neighborhood. It was established in 1910. Initially known as Second Baptist Church adopted the name St John Baptist Church in 1931 It was recognized as one of the Movement churches by the Birmingham Historical Society for its role in the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights in the 1950s and 60s. The senior pastor is Nathaniel Brooks

A new $1.5 million, 10,500 square foot brick sanctuary building was completed in 2006 by BUCO Building Constructors, who performed design-build services for the project.
