Hugh Locke

Hugh Allen Locke (born February 9, 1885 in Fayette County, Tennessee; died June 14, 1971) was an attorney, judge, founder of the Birmingham School of Law, and trustee of Birmingham-Southern College,

Locke was the son of Robert and Susanna F. Crenshaw Locke. He completed his undergraduate degree at Birmingham-Southern and a law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1907. He was an assistant solicitor for Jefferson County from 1909 to 1912. He began tutoring young bar candidates in Birmingham in 1915, establishing what became the Birmingham School of Law. He served as a Chancery Court judge from 1915 to 1922.

He married the former Mabel Plosser on October 12, 1921 and had four children, Hugh Jr, Louis, Mabel, and Margaret.

In 1930, Locke ran as an independent candidate for Governor of Alabama. He also served terms as president of the Birmingham Bar Association and the Exchange Club of Birmingham, and was a long-time trustee of First Methodist Church and of Birmingham-Southern College. In 1954 he was one of the co-founders of the American States' Rights Association.

Locke died in 1971 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
