Photograph of May 3, 1963 by Charles Moore (Black Star) showing Black teenagers pinned to a wall by spray from a fire hose. Images like this one, published in LIFE magazine, became emblems of the brutishness of resistance to the Civil rights movement in Birmingham. This image was selected by LIFE as one of the "100 Photographs that Changed the World".
The image is copyrighted to Moore and the Black Star agency and is published here under the doctrine of "Fair Use" because of its iconic and irreplaceable nature as a record of a historical event.
The girl in front holding onto the doorway has been identified by her nephew B. J. Jones as Peggy Trainer (link). The boy in the middle of the group has been identified as Albert Scruggs (link)
