J. Clyde Orr

John Clyde Orr (born January 16, 1890 in Morgan County; died June 27, 1989 in Birmingham) was a long-time principal for Birmingham City Schools, superintendent of Bessemer City Schools, and later interim director of the Birmingham University School.

Orr, the son of John Walter Orr and his second wife, the former Elizabeth Jane Stewart of Danville. He grew up in Somerville, Morgan County before entering the University of Alabama in 1913. He went on to complete a master's degree at Columbia University in New York City.

Orr served as principal of Lakeview Elementary School from 1921 to 1936. He then accepted the job of Superintendent at Bessemer. He returned to Birmingham in 1948 and spent four years as principal of Graymont Elementary School before returning to Lakeview for a second term in 1953.

Orr resigned from the Birmingham system in 1960 and accepted the job of overseeing the lower grades at Birmingham University School. In 1963 he succeeded Hardy Perritt as interim director of the school. Frank Marshall Jr was hired for the permanent position in 1963.

Orr died in 1989 and is buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
