As a young man Kallam was recognized for his skills as a vocal performer and earned two degrees at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. He served as a U.S. Army chaplain during the Korean War and went on to complete a doctorate at New York University.

In 1958 Kallam joined the faculty of Northeastern Bible College in Essex Fells, New Jersey.
