Jarman Shoes is an international retail shoe store chain with several locations in the Birmingham area. The company was founded as the Jarman Shoe Company in 1924 by James Franklin Jarman, J.H. Lawson and William Hatch Wemys in Nashville, Tennessee. The footwear chain now operates as part of the retail division of the publicly-traded Genesco Inc.

The Century Plaza store was located on the corner at center court across from Morrow's Nut House and catty-corner to Radio Shack.

Jarman Shoe Company ended retail operations 2004 closing a number of stores and converting the remainder of the existing leases to Underground Station. Genesco Inc. operated retail divisions under the brands of Jarman Shoes, Hardy Shoes, Johnston & Murphy, Flagg Shoe Company and later Dockers footwear, Journeys and Underground Station among others.

Locations

  • The Century Plaza Jarman Shoes location opened with the mall in 1975. It was converted to the Underground Station brand in the 1980s. Roy Palmer was the store's long-time manager. Following Roy Palmer, Tom Kirkpatrick managed this location as a Jarman Retail Store before its conversion to Underground Station. This location specialized in traditional men's footwear until it's merger with Flagg Bros when it began to move towards a more fashionable product.
  • The Riverchase Galleria location operated from 1993 to 2003 on the main level near Parisian.
  • The store had a location at 308 20th Street North.
  • Jarman also had a store at University Mall in Tuscaloosa, a store in Gadsden as well as several others around the state.
