Jimmy DeButts

Jimmy DeButts (born June 1974) is a news editor and columnist for the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland.

DeButts attended the University of South Carolina and served as sports editor for The Gamecock before completing his bachelor's degree in journalism in 1996. He began his career as a sports reporter for the Danville Register & Bee in Danville, Virginia. From 1997 to 2000 he had the same position with the Augusta Chronicle in Augusta, Georgia.

In September 2000 DeButts came to Birmingham as an Auburn Tigers beat reporter for the Birmingham Post-Herald. He stepped down in 2005 to serve as communications director for Lucy Baxley's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign. In January 2007 he joined the Birmingham Business Journal as a staff reporter, covering a range of topics. In July 2010 he accepted a transfer and promotion to become an associate editor of the Baltimore Business Journal. He joined the Capital Gazette as community news editor in 2012.

DuButts was part of that paper's staff when five of his colleagues were murdered in a mass shooting at its main office in Annapolis in June 2018.
