John Coe

John Valentine Coe (born December 17, 1872 in Selma, Dallas County; died June 10, 1941 in Birmingham) was the owner of the Birmingham Lumber and Coal Company.

Coe was the son of Selma lumber dealer Richard Blauvelt Coe and the former Amanda Caroline Ewing. He graduated from Marion Military Institute and opened a lumber business in Selma before moving to Birmingham around 1900. He married the former Margaret Ware Smith on November 6, 1901 and built a large frame house near Highland Avenue and Rhodes Park at 1108 29th Street South in 1908. His family remained in the house until 1970.

Coe suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage in 1941. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
