The John Dwyer residence was one of the most lavishly-ornate Queen-Anne style houses in Birmingham. It was constructed on 13th Avenue South in Nabob Hill in 1887 for the family of John Dwyer, superintendent of the Birmingham Rolling Mills.

Dwyer sold the house to W. D. Tynes of the Hardie-Tynes Manufacturing Company in the 1900s. The City of Birmingham acquired the property in 1927 for construction of the new Erskine Ramsay Technical High School.
