Julie Carmichael

Julie Gholson Carmichael (born June 4, 1958 in Birmingham) is a former child actor and former executive director of Giving Flite.

Carmichael was the second daughter of Ashby Gholson, a popular member of the Town & Gown Theater company. She was encourage to audition for the film version of Vera and Bill Cleaver's novel Where the Lilies Bloom. She was cast to play the protagonist, "Mary Call," who is given the responsibility of becoming the head of the household when her father, played by Rance Howard, succumbs to a long illness. Filming on location in Western North Carolina took place in the summer of 1972, and the film was released in 1974.

Carmichael was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for "Most Promising Newcomer," but lost to Susan Flannery. Rather than pursue acting, she finished her diploma at Mountain Brook High School and attended the University of Alabama. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in advertising and public relations in 1980 and began her career at an ad agency in Birmingham.

After marrying U.S. Air Force pilot Doug Carmichael she left her job to follow him from post to post and raise their two children. She later went back to work as executive director of the non-profit Giving Flite, and in business development for Cayenne Creative.
