Just A Few Cats is an R & B / Jazz band based in Birmingham. The band is perhaps best known for one of its members, vocalist and American Idol winner Ruben Studdard. Just A Few Cats was first organized by members of Ray Reach's UAB Jazz Ensemble, and some other friends, in the spring of 2000 to compete as a jazz band in a collegiate talent show on the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus. The band won first place, performing their rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Shortly thereafter, the band was approached by (then unknown) local singer Ruben Studdard about becoming lead vocalist for the group. The band quickly gained popularity in the Birmingham area.

Ruben was forced to leave the band in 2003 as he perfomed on American Idol. In 2004, the band released their own debut album, entitled CATastrophunk. The players on this album include: Alvin Garrett (vocals, electric bass); Terrence "T-Nasty" Baldwin, Paul "PJ" Morton (vocals); Keith Williams (electric guitar); Earnest Echols (horns); John Jackson, Coleman Woodson III (keyboards); Tim George (drums); and Michael Panepento (percussion).

The band performed at City Stages in 2003 and 2005. In 2008, Just A Few Cats won a Birmingham Area Music Award for "Best Cover Band".
