Kevin Howell acted as Chief of Police of Gardendale in mid-2007.

Biography

Howell was the Gardendale Police Department's only lieutenant when he was appointed acting Chief of Police after the retirement of Wallace Campbell in July 2007. The Mayor and City Council expected Howell's appointment to be only for a short term, but then discovered the Personnel Board of Jefferson County didn't have a list of police chief candidates in place. To get around this limitation, Leeds Police Chief Mike Walker was hired as the new, permanent chief in August.

Howell submitted his resignation to Mayor Kenny Clemons in early October 2007. Howell had 28 years of experience as a police officer, mostly in Gardendale. He also had 28 years invested in the state retirement system, leaving him little to gain by staying. Although positions for a captain and second lieutenant had been recently approved by the city, they were unfilled at the time of Howell's departure, leaving the police department with no high-ranking officers except for the Chief.
