Listing

  1. June 13: John W. "Willie" Kimbro, 29, died from a gunshot wound suffered on the evening of June 11 during a quarrel with his next-door neighbor outside his home on Avenue C near 19th Street South. The neighbor, Anthony Johnson, had come complaining that Kimbro's wife had accused Johnson's wife of sharing a bed with a Black servant. Kimbro, unarmed, dictated a statement to Justice of the Peace John Kennedy before succumbing to his wounds. Johnson was convicted of 2nd degree murder. His appeal of that conviction was rejected by the Alabama State Supreme Court in 1894. (link)
