1914 Birmingham homicides

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 1914. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.

According to Kenneth Barnhart's survey of Jefferson County Board of Health statistics, Birmingham had 117 homicides in 1914, a rate of 76.4 per 100,000 population. Of those, 23 victims were white (24.8 per 100,000) and 94 were Black (155.9 per 100,000).

  • January: Said Waked, described as an "Assyrian woman", died in hospital care from shock suffered when her husband and another man were shot during a robbery at their grocery store. Wash Gray and Bennie Ward were arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  • March 17: James Benetos, 32, partner with his brother in a grocery store at 36th Street and 10th Avenue North, died from gunshot wounds suffered in a March 10 dispute with Luby Stevens, a driver for the Excelsior Bakery, over 25 cents in change. Stevens recovered from the gunshot wounds he received in return. He was tried for capital murder, but witnesses could not agree on who shot first.
