Avondale

  • April 21: An unidentified African-American male was found dead, with his head split open as if by an axe, inside a tent left behind when a group of people described as "gypsies" left their encampment in the woods near Avondale. (report)

Birmingham

Bessemer

  • April 4: John Manning, an officer of the Bessemer Police Department, was shot to death while attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a home. The shooter, Sandy Jones, fled the scene and was reported seen as far away as Mexico. He was captured in Mobile in September and returned to Birmingham to stand trial. He was convicted and sentenced to hang. His execution took place on May 9, 1890 at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Pratt Mines

  • George W. Blakely was killed when he was struck with a brick. Aaron M. Hayes was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. (report)
