Jefferson County

June 30: William Harry Merritt, 55, owner of Merritt Theaters, was shot to death at his home at Lake Shore Stables in Homewood. A stablehand, Walter Simmons Jr, was arrested and charged with his murder.
October 16: Corinne Limbaugh, 34, was found beaten to death in a ravine near the Atlanta Highway 12 miles east of Birmingham.
