Homewood

• March 9: Toni Maria Lim, 23, found bound in her apartment at Raleigh Villas with her throat slit and evidence of rape. Lim was a married student who performed at Sammy's Go-Go. Steven Alan Petric was charged with capital murder in 2004 after being jailed for armed robbery in Illinois. A national database matched his DNA to a sample taken from Lim's apartment. He was convicted in August 2009 and sentenced to death. [1]

Unincorporated Jefferson County

• January 12: Bill Donaldson, a correctional officer, was stabbed to death while working at the West Jefferson Correctional Facility. The prison was renamed in his memory the following year. [2]
