This is a List of homicides in 2016, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 201 homicides were reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and adjudicated through the courts.

Blount County

  1. April 19: Daniel Eric Blackmon, 38, was killed in a shootout with police after multi-county shooting spree. Blackmon began early that morning by firing on a concrete truck in Marshall County. At 7:00 AM he was reported to be firing at other drivers with a shotgun from his truck, at an intersection on U.S. Highway 278 in Blount County. Two people were wounded there. He fled down Rocky Hollow Road and fired on at least one other vehicle before returning to Marshall County, where he shot a person in the chest. His truck was spotted by law enforcement on U.S. Highway 231 and four agencies were involved in the pursuit, during which Blackmon fired at officers. He returned to Highway 278 and crashed his truck near Alabama State Highway 79 where he was fatally wounded in an exchange of fire. (report)
  2. June 10: Jerry Holaway, 68, was shot to death at his home on Alabama State Highway 79 in Blountsville. His wife, Bobbie Green Holaway, claimed self-defense. Incriminating text messages to another man were found on her mobile phone and she was convicted of murder in January 2020. (report)
  3. November 22: Bennie Moore, 78, was shot to death along with his wife at their home on 1000 block of Blount County Road 10 in Blountsville. His son, Heath Benson Moore, called 911 to report that he had shot his parents. He was taken into custody at the scene and indicted for capital murder by a grand jury in January 2017. (report)
  4. November 22: Fay Moore, 74, was killed in the same incident.

Calhoun County

  1. January 15: Deatrice Marquiste Barclay, 42, was shot to death during a gunfight on Pernita Street, west Woodland Park. The location is outside Anniston's city limits, but within the jurisdiction of the Anniston Police Department. Joel Evan Abbott and Joshua Shane Parker were arrested and charged with murder. Parker, an employee of the Anniston City Jail, was placed on administrative leave and the incident was turned over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. (report)
  2. January 23: Michael Clark, 30, was shot during an altercation with his wife at the Country Court Inn on U.S. Highway 78 in Anniston and died later at Regional Medical Center. His stepson, Steven Taylor Cobb, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. May 17: One person was killed and two others wounded in a shootout on the 2100 block of South Christine Avenue in Anniston. No arrest. (report)
  4. June 8: Franklin Key, 43, was found shot to death in a home on Montgomery Avenue in Anniston. Marcus Swink was arrested and charged, but the charge was dismissed when a witness changed their story. (report)
  5. June 26: An unnamed male, 19, was shot to death on the 1000 block of South Christine Avenue in Anniston. No arrest. (report)
  6. September 30: Jessica McDonald of Birmingham was shot to death during an argument at a Sin City Biker Club rally on the 600 block of South Noble Street in Anniston. Natasha Jones of Chattanooga, Tennessee was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  7. November 14: Anshelya Williams, 21, was shot to death on the 500 block of Glen Addie Avenue in Anniston. Quiaundra Mims was charged with murder and turned herself in. (report)

Cullman County

  1. March 12: Wesley Shannon Taylor, 22, was found dead off of Cullman County Road 1101 in the Battleground community. Isaac Wayne Hill was taken into custody and charged with murder. (report)
  2. May 31: James Lee Sanson, 1, died at Children's Hospital from injuries suffered while under the care of two adults not related to him. He had initially been brought to Cullman Regional Medical Center. His death has been classified as a homicide, but no charges have been filed. (report)
  3. September 16: Leslie Clements, 33, was found dead under "suspicious circumstances" on the floor of her apartment on Fuller Street in Cullman. Her car was found at the scene of a reported house fire on Cullman County Road 33 in Colony. Jerome Anthony Flanigan and Kayla Sherea Thursby were arrested in 2018 and charged with murder, theft and arson. (report)
  4. October 5: Edwin Lee Wood was found dead at a home on Cullman County Road 625 in the Phelan community. Windell Joe Campbell was arrested and charged with murder and other drug offenses. (report)

Etowah County

  1. January 26: Jerry Wayne Davis, 52, was found dead in an overgrown area off Brooke Avenue near I-759 in Gadsden. No arrest. A reward of $5,000 has been offered for information. (report)
  2. October 18: A 6-week-old infant was found dead in the Colley Homes project on the 400 block of North 6th Street in Gadsden. The mother, Autumn Vanessa Gray, was arrested and charged with reckless murder. (report)
  3. November 2: Joyce Ann Brown Good, 65, was killed along with her boyfriend at her home at 307 Aderholt Street in Glencoe. Her son, Jeremy James Jerry, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  4. November 2: Jimmie Ray Lively, 62, was murdered in the same incident.
  5. November 6: An unnamed male, 60, was found dead at his home on Riddles Bend Road in Rainbow City. Hunter David Bellew was taken into custody as a person of interest, but has not been charged. (report)

Bessemer

  1. January 21: Brandon Nevels, 24, died at UAB Hospital from burns suffered in an attack on June 5, 2015 at 29th Street and Carolina Avenue. He was beaten by several individuals and then doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire. No arrest. (report)
  2. April 3: Joel Nahshon Jordan, 30, was fatally wounded by gunfire at a Shell gas station at 2801 9th Avenue North and died later at UAB Hospital. Investigators determined that the shooting was self-defense and no charges were filed. (report)
  3. April 30: Robert King Williams, 38, was killed in a shootout during a large cookout on the 1800 block of 15th Street North. (report)
  4. June 5: Brett Allen Kimbrel, 22, died on I-59/20 near mile marker 113. He was riding in a black Ford Mustang driven by Abby Hyman, who was injured in the incident. The shooting stemmed from an earlier dispute in Brighton. Hyman identified Roderick Johnson of Hoover, whom she knew by his nickname, "G", as the shooter, and later picked him out of a line-up. He has been charged with capital murder (report)
  5. July 20: The remains of Montoures Long, 23, were found behind an abandoned home on the 7300 block of Springer Road. Long had been reported missing from his home on July 6. A car he was using was found abandoned in Birmingham on July 15. Bessemer police located his remains after receiving an anonymous tip. Davonta Jamal Hutton was arrested in November and charged with murder. Another suspect, Lametria Henderson, was arrested and charged in March 2017. Other arrests are possible as the investigation continues. (report)
  6. August 28: Tammy Lynn Huddleston, 49, died at UAB Hospital a day after she was stabbed in the abdomen by her daughter during a fight in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart at 750 Academy Drive. Ashia Christine Fletcher fled the scene with her boyfriend in a blue Nissan Versa and was captured days later and charged with murder. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter before Judge David Carpenter in May 2018 and was sentenced to 20 years (report)
  7. November 11: DeCarlos DeAndre Walker, 20, was shot to death during an altercation on the 500 block of 7th Avenue North. Steven McMillon, Tyran McMillon and Damyon Hill were arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)

Brighton

  1. May 12: Phillip Eugene Jackson, 23, was shot to death near the intersection of 48th Street and Martin Street. No arrest. (report)
  2. August 27: Antonio Hinkle, 32, was killed by a stray shot fired during a gunfight at the close of Brighton's "Love Thy Neighbor Day" event at Brighton Park, where he had been cooking food all day. Six others were wounded. Four firearms and scores of shell casings were recovered at the scene. Jimmy Dewayne Williams and his son, Samarjay Jarranid Leshore, were arrested and charged with Hinkle's murder. Charges against both of them were dismissed by Judge David Carpenter during a preliminary hearing in November for lack of probable cause. Leshore and Williams were re-arrested after a grand jury indictment in February 2017. (report)

Center Point

  1. April 28: Jasmine Lashenay Nixon, 23, was shot and killed on the 500 block of 16th Terrace West after going to a house with others there to confront the family of a boy who had upset her younger sister. After an investigation, it was determined that Nixon had forced her way inside the house and that the shooting was justifiable self-defense. (report)
  2. June 20: Jason Winfred Woodson, 46, was killed when his motorcycle was rear ended by a minivan on the 1400 block of Fourth Place Northwest. The van's driver, Richard Sanders, 65, was inebriated and was charged with criminally negligent homicide. (report)

Clay

  1. April 7: Jody Marie Watson, 38, was shot to death at her home on the 6300 block of Yellowhammer Drive while two of her three children were present. Jeremy Hardin called 911 to report that he had shot his girlfriend. He was taken into custody at the scene and was freed on bond pending formal charges. A grand jury indicted him for intentional murder in May 2017. He pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced by Judge Tracie Todd to serve 20 years in prison. (report)

Fairfield

  1. February 20: Jarvaris Henry James, 33, was shot to death on 58th Street, near Crumbey Bethel Primitive Baptist Church. He is believed to have tracked his stolen smart phone to the location before he was killed. Jamal Deonte Eaton was arrested and charged with capital murder. Originally a witness had misidentified the suspect as Jama's brother, Jamil Deandre "G-Bo" Eatmon. (report)
  2. March 23: Alshera Katrice Chew, 23, and her boyfriend were found shot to death in his home on Jerry D. Coleman Street after an apparent robbery. The house was burned down later the same night by arson. No arrest. A reward of up to $5,000 has been offered for information leading to a conviction. (report)
  3. March 23: Paul "Chico Suave" Middleton, 39, was shot to death along with Chew.
  4. April 7: Adarius Elon Williams, 28, was shot to death outside the Citgo station at the corner of Milstead Road and Woodward Avenue as part of a dispute over an engagement ring he had given to Barbara Ann Washington and wanted returned. She and her brother, Vincent Dwight Washington, agreed to meet him at the gas station, where they argued briefly before Vincent pulled a gun and fired 10 shots at Williams. Another person shot and wounded Vincent Washington. He was taken by private vehicle to UAB Medical West where he and his sister were arrested and charged with murder. Vincent Washington failed to appear at trial and was arrested again in July 2017 on the outstanding warrant as part of "Operation Python". Both siblings pleaded guilty before Judge David Carpenter in separate hearings in early 2023. Vincent was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Barbara was given a 20-year sentence with a minimum of 3 years to serve and 5 years of probation. (report)
  5. June 10: Parnell Joseph Jones IV, 26, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered in his car on the 5100 block of Myron Massey Boulevard. No arrest. (report)
  6. June 19: Arrico Eatmon, 17, was shot in front of a home on the 5500 block of Avenue D and later pronounced dead at UAB Medical Center West. Courtline Griffin was arrested two weeks later and charged with murder. (report)
  7. September 23: Darryl Dewayne Grace, 26, was fatally wounded in a gunfight at the Chevron on Lloyd Noland Parkway. (report)
  8. September 23: Mandel Hardy Lawson Jr, 21, was fatally wounded in the same shootout. No other suspects are sought.
  9. October 21: Jimmy Lone Frizzle, 34, 6700 block of Avenue C. No arrest. (report)
  10. December 18: Omar Kareem Honor, 22, was killed by gunfire while driving on the 200 block of 57th Street. Jonathan Cordarius Lindsay was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Fultondale

  1. February 13: Ronald Mark "Ronnie" Fassina died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered in a shootout following a robbery attempt the previous Wednesday evening at 573 Overlook Road in Chapel Hills. Kameron Deandre David was charged with capital murder and Joshua Dixon was charged with felony murder. Fassina's son, Jeremy, was in a relationship with David prior to the incident. He was also arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, and later re-arrested when he violated the terms of his bond. A jury rejected the capital charges against David and convicted him for intentional murder in Michael Streety's court. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Dixon pleaded guilty to lesser charges of first-degree kidnapping, robbery, and burglary. Streety gave him a 20 year split sentence with a minimum of 4 years served (report)
  2. May 17: Andre Boyd, 40, was shot to death during an argument with his brother at their home in the Fultondale Villas public housing project on Stoney Brook Lane. The shooter was taken into custody at the scene, but has not yet been charged. (report)

Gardendale

  1. January 15: Khiry Devante Hicks, 28, was found shot to death on New Found Road near Ashford Avenue outside The Arbor neighborhood. Two suspects were seen leaving in a dark colored vehicle. DeJuante Tymon Jackson, 19, was arrested and charged with capital murder. His brother, Tyler Raymon Watkins, was also charged with hindering prosecution. (report)

Homewood

  1. March 26: Arturo Delgado Medina, 25, was shot to death during an argument just outside the door of La Sabrosita ice cream shop at 293 West Valley Avenue at 10:15 PM. Francisco Javier Salguero has been charged with the murder, but remains at large. (report)
  2. July 26: Caden Jemison, 2, drowned to death in the swimming pool at the Chastaine Park Apartments. Investigators determined that his mother, Davida Samantha Flint, had left Caden and two other children unsupervised to go shopping. She was charged with reckless manslaughter. (report)
  3. July 29: Amanda Bivens, 40, was shot to death by Homewood Police officers outside a store near the intersection of West Valley Avenue and Vulcan Road. The officers were responding to a report of a female at the location who was suspected in a string of armed robberies. When they confronted her, she raised a handgun, prompting the officers to shoot. An accomplice was taken into custody soon aftwerward. (report)
  4. July 31: Jordan Gray, 10, was shot at his home in the Elevation Apartments (the former Lakeshore Landing Apartments) and died later at Children's Hospital. His cousin, Cenius Williams III, was arrested and charged with reckless manslaughter. He pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced by Judge Virginia Vinson to 20 years in prison with a minimum of four years served. (report)
  5. December 5: Shuterica Shuntavious Lipscomb, 22, was fatally wounded during a fight with her boyfriend, Tavares Jerome Jackson, at her apartment at the Overlook at Homewood on Valley Ridge Drive. Jackson and a friend dropped her off at the door of the Birmingham VA Medical Center, where she pronounced dead. Jackson was initially charged with murder, but was convicted at trial on a lesser charge of reckless manslaughter. (report)

Hoover

  1. January 5: Jonathan Michael "Mike" Gilotti, 33, was shot to death in his driveway on the 5500 block of Park Side Circle in the Lake Cyrus subdivision just before 5:00 AM as he was leaving for a morning work-out. Investigators believe he may have encountered a person or persons responsible for a rash of auto break-ins in the area. Charleston Everett Wells, Ahmad Johnson, Darrian Bryant, and De'Ron Lucas, all said to be members of the Bessemer-based street gang M-Tre, were arrested and charged with capital murder and an assortment of other crimes. Wells, the alleged shooter, was acquitted of the murder charge at trial in May 2017. He was given a suspended jail sentence for conviction on nine counts of breaking and entering vehicles. Johnson was acquitted of murder in April 2018, but convicted on two counts of receiving stolen property. Bryant's murder charge was dismissed, but he pleaded guilty to 9 counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle. Lucas' charge was also dismissed. (report)
  2. March 15: An unborn child died from a beating given to its 28-year-old mother, 7 months pregnant, at her home on Larkspur Drive. Her ex-boyfriend, Christopher Ammons Kemp, was arrested and charged with capital murder and first-degree domestic violence. He was convicted at trial in Laura Petro's court on a lesser charge of felony murder and first-degree domestic violence in July 2018, and subsequently sentenced to life in prison. (report)
  3. August 14: Crystal Lavonne Ponder, 34, was killed, and her husband and son injured, when their Honda Accord, traveling southbound on I-65 between Alford Avenue and Montgomery Highway, was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Cruze which was traveling the wrong way, and then struck by another Cruze. Pedro Ivan Rico Mendoza, the driver of the first Cruze, fled the scene on foot, but was captured nearby and found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with reckless murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. (report)
  4. November 27: Howard Hardy, 24, was shot to death by his girlfriend's stepfather during an argument at her home at the Ashby at Ross Bridge apartments. The suspect fled the scene, but was taken into custody later the same day in Bessemer. (report)

Hueytown

  1. December 27: Colt Coggins, 17, was shot to death during an illegal gun transaction on the 500 block of Carver Avenue. Deion Dewayne Jones, the suspected shooter, was arrested and charged with capital murder. Another suspect, Brenden Jordan Long, was charged with felony murder. Jones pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of felony murder in January 2020. Judge David Carpenter sentenced him to 30 years in prison. (report)

Irondale

  1. April 22: Melinda Searight, 42, was beaten and shot in the head in her apartment on Meadows Drive in the Colonial Village at Trussville while her three teenage daughters were getting ready for school. Her boyfriend, Anthony Lanier Kelly, fled the scene, but later turned himself in at the Jefferson County Jail. He was charged with murder and convicted at trial on a lesser charge of reckless manslaughter before Judge Clyde Jones, who sentenced him to serve 20 years in prison. (report)
  2. November 29: One person was killed when the pickup truck they were riding in was clipped by another car on I-20, westbound near the Kilgore Memorial Drive exit. The driver of the other car, a dark blue or black Dodge Charger, left the scene and is sought by police. (report)

Kimberly

  1. September 17: Coy Lynn Bartlett, 20, was shot to death during an argument at a friend's house on the 400 block of Park Avenue. Aaron Cory Thrift was convicted at trial before Judge Clyde Jones in February 2018 and sentenced later to life in prison. (report)

Leeds

  1. February 3: Meredith Jones, 35, was killed in a head-on collision on Parkway Drive. Jennifer Schrencongost, who was reportedly driving erratically with a 3-year-old in her car, crossed the median before striking Jones' car. After the results of blood toxicology tests were received, she was charged with reckless manslaughter. She stood trial before Judge Laura Petro in May 2018. She was convicted on that charge and sentenced to 10 years in prison. (report)
  2. July 23: Carlos Dewayne Campbell, 32, was shot to death in a fight over a woman on the 7600 block of Henry Ellen Way. The other man was also seriously wounded. Investigators from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office determined that the shooting was justified as self-defense. (report)

Lipscomb

  1. March 30: Hondre Dejuan Vann, 26, was shot to death on the 5500 block of 6th Street. No arrest. (report)
  2. December 8: Ashlynn Sparks, 18, died at UAB Hospital of gunshot wounds suffered during an attempted robbery while she was sitting in a car with her boyfriend on Circle Avenue the previous night. Adam Decoreyae Smith pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison in June 2020. Courtney Brianna Devaughn pleaded guilty to felony murder in September 2021 and was given a 5-year sentence. Richard Steven Martinez and Anthony Dewayne Smith have also been charged in her murder. Midfield

  1. August 17: Glenn Hardy, 50, was found shot to death in the basement of the former Coram Wholesale Tires at 588 Bessemer Super Highway, an area he and his nephew were using to run an illicit electronic bingo parlor. His 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck was recovered at the King's Inn on 3rd Avenue North in Birmingham. The nephew, Gary Rembert, was taken into custody from the same motel two days later. A second suspect, seen on hotel security camera footage, is sought. (report)

Mountain Brook

  1. March 7: An unborn child died from injuries sustained in a head-on vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 280 near Rocky Ridge Road. The mother, Tiffany Horton, 33 weeks pregnant, was also seriously injured when a Chevrolet Blazer crossed the median and struck her Toyota Camry head on at 60-65 miles per hour. The driver of the Blazer, Irwin Francisco-Bartolo was arrested at the scene. He was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol. He pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter and first-degree assault and was sentenced by Judge Stephen Wallace to serve 18 years in prison. (report)

Pleasant Grove

  1. January 13: Ashton Blake Roberts, 21, was shot to death during a robbery at Jack's at 27 Park Road. Roderick Derrell King was arrested and charged with murder. He is also being held on violation of probation from a previous arrest, and is charged in two other holdups, at a Papa Murphy's in Hueytown and a Burger King in Fairfield. Another charge of attempted bribery was added after King offered money to a prison guard for a cell phone, cigarettes and drugs. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and, after several delays, is set to be tried before Judge David Carpenter in January 2018. (report)

Tarrant

  1. March 20 Harvey Ray Clements, 71, was found dead in his home on the 1200 block of Ford Avenue. Clements had been known to loan cash to people and was twice the victim of home invasions in October 2015. (report)
  2. May 31: Desmond Cortez Burton, 31, was found dead after an early morning shooting near the 1100 block of Sloan Avenue. Carlos Pearson was arrested and charged with murder. (link)

Trussville

  1. February 10: Brittaney Owens, 26, was shot to death by Troy Green, an ex-boyfriend and the father of her two children, during a dispute at her parents' home on Camp Coleman Road at Windsong Drive. Green followed her to the house, struck her car with his, then walked up and shot her in the chest. He then returned to his car and killed himself. (report)

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. January 28: Raheem Jonas Tyreze Stubbs, 22, was shot to death while breaking into a neighbor's home on the 1900 block of Springlake Court near Center Point. The owner arrived shortly after his 8-year-old son called him about the break-in and confronted three intruders. Two other burglary suspects, one of whom may have been wounded, fled the scene. No charges were filed against the homeowner. Jamarcus Boris Stubbs, Raheem's uncle, was later arrested and charged with murder and 2nd degree burglary. He pleaded guilty to the burglary charge in April 2017. (report)
  2. February 20: William Lewis, 37, was fatally wounded in a shootout that resulted from a dispute over marijuana at a vacant lot on the 200 block of Elm Street Southwest just outside Bessemer. Mario Desmond was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. February 27: Timothy James "T. J." Hatter, 24, was killed in an automobile collision on the 7700 block of Smith Camp Road. He was a passenger in a pick-up truck being driven by Timothy Ray White, who was determined to be driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.249. White was charged in October with murder and first-degree assault. (report)
  4. June 1: Tammy Gail Marie Bernard, 56, died at UAB Hospital from injuries sustained when the pickup truck she was riding in ran off the road on the 5900 block of Snowville-Brent Road near the Walker County line on May 23. The driver, Rebecca Ann Watson, was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol. She was indicted on a charge of reckless murder in March 2018. (report)
  5. September 7: James Richard Olvey, 67, was killed when his pick-up truck was hit head on by another pick-up truck going north against southbound traffic on I-65 north of Exit 282 in Warrior. Donald Hornsby Wright was fleeing Warrior Police, having already been chased by officers from Kimberly, Morris and Trafford. Hornsby was airlifted to UAB Hospital and later charged with murder.   6. October 1: The remains of Duston "Dusty" Turner, 39, were found in a shallow grave in a wooded site off Oakdale Road near the Miller Steam Plant in western Jefferson County. He and his girlfriend had been reported missing from their home in Quinton on September 14. No arrest.
  7. October 1: The remains of Jennifer Phillips, 30, were found at the same site. (report)

Shelby County

  1. May 2: Holly Myrick, 33, was killed in a hit-and-run on Shelby County Road 52 in front of the Golden Rule Bar-B-Q in Helena. Damian Lamar Jackson, who had been involved in a dispute with Myrick over a drug sale, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, distribution of a controlled substance, and felony leaving the scene of an accident.   2. May 19: Jason Cohill, 33, was shot to death near his grandfather's house on Fleming Road in Vincent after apparently arguing over a $20 debt. Rodney Brown was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted at trial for the lesser charge of manslaughter and sentenced by Judge William Bostick to serve 20 years in prison. (report)
  3. June 6: Keith Fulgham, 40, was found stabbed to death in a mobile home park on Gilmore-Nick Circle in Almont, just north of Montevallo. Latasha Nicole Smith was arrested and charged with murder. He conviction was upheld by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in September 2018. (report)
  4. June 25: Christen Nichole "Nicki" Carr, 31, was found dead at her home off of Milgray Lane north of Calera. Her husband, Kenneth Thomas Young, who has a long criminal record, was charged with murder and with felony leaving the scene of an accident with death. He reportedly struck her with his car and then left the scene of the accident. He was indicted in October 2016. (report)
  5. August 5: Robert Alan Gentry, 43, was killed after his parked car on the shoulder of I-65 was struck by a drunk driver. Daniel Joseph Robinson was arrested and charged with reckless murder and driving under the influence. The charge was affirmed by a grand jury in August 2017. (report)
  6. October 30: Tracy Latty Algar, 54, a clerk at the Kirkland Chevron on the 1300 block of 1st Street North (U.S. Highway 31), was shot to death during a robbery on Sunday morning. Michael Anthony Powell was convicted of capital murder in Bill Bostick's court in May 2021 and sentenced to death. (report)
  7. December 14: Constance "Connie" Lee Overstreet Woolweaver, 37, was found shot to death in her home on Sheffield Way in the gated Highland Lakes subdivision off Dunnavant Valley Road. Her friend and former business partner, Adam Michael Burrus, was charged with murder. He was convicted in Judge Bill Bostick's court in May 2019 and sentenced to life in prison. (report)

  1. February 28: Nathan Grissom, 41, was fatally shot by an Ashville police officer responding to a 911 call of a domestic dispute on the 200 block of 5th Avenue in Ashville. Grissom had been ordered to vacate the home, which he had shared with his wife and his daughter by a previous marriage, following a previous violent fight and his wife's petition for protection from abuse. The officer-involved shooting is under review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. (report)

Talladega County

  1. May 28: Dennis Hudson, 50, was shot to death by a Lincoln Police Department officer responding to a domestic incident at a Discount Food Mart on U.S. Highway 78 in Eastaboga. Hudson was armed with a shotgun. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the officer involved shooting. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. January 8: John Tyler Burroughs, 18, was one of two victims of a shooting during an argument at 2201 East 48th Street at the Aspen Village Apartments in Tuscaloosa. Orlanda Lamar Johnson Walker Jr was arrested and charged with capital murder and kidnapping. (report)
  2. January 8: Harlee Joseph Watson, 19, was the second victim.
  3. January 11: Markee Antwon Lee, 27, was shot near Hargrove Road and 11th Avenue in Tuscaloosa after a fight broke out during a late-night birthday party. Deshawn Lamarcus Holliday and Brandon Jerron Elliott were both arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  4. May 29: Barrie Dwayne "Barric" Riggs, 43, was found shot to death in his vehicle on the 3300 block of 16th Street in Tuscaloosa. The shooting is thought to be drug-related. Steven Pickett was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  5. June 6: Jayla Latrice Parler, 13, was killed along with her younger half-sister when the Ford Fiesta they were riding in was struck on U.S. Highway 82 10 miles east of Tuscaloosa. Neither girl was wearing a seatbelt. Former astronaut James Halsell Jr of Huntsville was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and charged with murder. (report)
  6. June 6: Niomi Deona James, 11, was killed in the same collision.
  7. July 24: Juan Pasquel, 25, was stabbed to death during a domestic argument at an apartment in the 1000 building of Forrester Gardens Apartments on James I. Harrison Parkway in Tuscaloosa. Dazray Nevels was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. Additional charges for aggravated child abuse were leveled against Nevels in February 2017. (report)
  8. August 6: Cleophus Henderson Jr, 49, was killed in an automobile collision at Helen Keller Boulevard and University Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. Anthony Dewayne Wells, the driver of the car he was riding in, was charged with murder based on witness statements saying that he was speeding and ran a red light. He was arrested on August 27.   9. August 11: Ruby Prentice, 65, was shot to death along with her grandson at their home at 5709 29th Avenue East off of Jug Factory Road in Tuscaloosa. Her husband, Victor Neal Prentice, was arrested after a standoff and charged with capital murder. (report)
  10. August 11: Justin Marquise Prentice, 20, was killed in the same incident.
  11. August 16: Travis Nichols, 37, was shot to death by his older brother at 4815 Reichhold Road in Tuscaloosa. Michael Nichols was apprehended at the scene and charged with murder. (report)
  12. September 21: Zhalil Ware, 22, was shot to death while attempting a robbery at the Creekwood Village Apartments. His twin brother, Zhamelle, was also wounded in the hip when the intended victim began shooting in self defense. No charges were filed against the shooter. Zhamelle Ware was charged with felony murder. (report)
  13. September 30: Terry J. Dawson, 26, was shot to death at the Boardwalk Apartments on Old Montgomery Highway.   14. October 27: Quinton Allen Doughty, 30, was shot to death at a gathering on the 300 block of East 24th Avenue in Tuscaloosa. Kieric Diangelo Mitchell was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  15. November 9: The remains of Morris David Watson, 59, were found off of Calhoun Road in the vicinity of Vance. He had been reported missing from his home in Northport since September 9. Based on a tip from an eyewitness, Donnie Lee McCutcheon was arrested at a trailer in North Georgia and charged with murder. His girlfriend, Watson's former step-daughter, Annie Weir, was charged with receiving stolen property. (report)
  16. November 30: Willis Sample, 77, died from a heart attack which followed a violent break-in at his home on the 1500 block of 55th Court East in Cottondale. His wife was also present and was briefly hospitalized as a precaution. Two suspects fled in Sample's Mecury Marquis sedan, which was recovered later in Holt. Donald Augustus Clark was arrested and charged with murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree theft and first-degree kidnapping. Another suspect is sought. (report)
  17. December 21: The remains of Jennette "Jenny" Sims Brannon, 30, missing since December 4, were found in a wooded area near the home of Charles Richard Sexton at 10368 Beulah Lake Lane in Cottondale during a search. Sexton was arrested and charged with her murder. (report)
  18. December 25: Tamiesure Minter Vanhorn, 34, was shot to death by her husband, who them killed himself in front of their 9-year-old daughter at their home in the Cedar Bend Mobile Home Park in Moundville. (report)

Walker County

  1. February 13: Nicholas Hawkins, 19, was shot in the back and bludgeoned to death at a vacant lot in southwest Dora. Joshua Adam Reese, Cory Daniel Conner, and Danny Lee Jarvis were arrested and charged with murder. Tessa Wise, Lawanda Reese and Colton Stephen Echols were charged with hindering prosecution. Based on testimony from his co-defendants, investigators concluded that Joshua Reese carried out the murder and disposal of Hawkins's body. They also learned that Reese had been in a romantic relationship with Hawkins, and also with Hawkins' mother, Daphne Webb. After a preliminary hearing for the three murder defendants on April 27, 2016, Judge Henry Allred sent the charges to a grand jury. Reese pleaded guilty to murder before Judge Hoyt Elliott and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. (report)
  2. May 30: Terry Wayne Roberts, 55, was found shot to death under a mattress in a house on Allen Ridge Road in Empire. Three people have been charged in connection with his death. (report)
  3. September 20: Lyle Guthrie, 32, was shot to death while pursuing two men who had attempted to break into his home on Providence Loop Road in Oakmon. The suspects' car crashed shortly afterward. Easton Gant and Aaron Harris were taken into custody. (report)
  4. November 5: Justin Denny, 29, was found shot to death on the 1200 block of Coon Creek Road in Empire. No arrest. (report)
