This is a List of homicides in 2017, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 248 homicides were reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and adjudicated through the courts.

Bibb County

  1. August 17: Kelvin Jackson was shot in the back and killed at a home on Bearden Farm Road in West Blocton. Travis Holt was arrested and charged with murder. The investigation was supported by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. (report)
  2. September 8: Cedric Jerome Robinson, 33, an inmate at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent, was stabbed to death by a group of other inmates. Dominique Covin pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge Collins Pettaway. Another inmate, Roderick Delaune, was also charged with Robinson's murder. (report)

Blount County

  1. February 25: Bethany Brooke Evans, 23, was shot to death at the home of Patrick Dorsett off of Tuscaloosa Pike in Cleveland. Dorsett was arrested and charged with capital murder. He pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to serve 99 years in prison. (report)
  2. May 17: Grady Leon Goodwin, 79, was killed when his 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck was struck head-on by a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Alabama State Highway 79 in Dallas. Heather Heaton, whose 3 year-old son was also killed, was found to have alprazolam, fentanyl, methadone, and morphine in her system. She was indicted by a grand jury in 2018 and arrested in 2020. She pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless murder in April 2021 and given concurrent 30 year sentences for each count. (report)
  3. May 17: Brayden Mahaffey, 3, was killed in the same incident.
  4. December 19: Ricardo Santiago Gonzalez and his wife were reported missing from their home in Cleveland on December 16. Their 17-year-old son, Leo Santiago Chavez, was charged with capital murder and robbery in connection with their deaths on the 19th. Three other teenage suspects were also charged: Jose Gamaliel Villanueva, Jose Guevara-Valadez, and Angel Perez Santos. Gonzalez's pickup truck was recovered in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The couple's bodies were found off of Sims Road in the Straight Mountain area south of Oneonta in January 2018. Chavez was convicted of capital murder in March 2020 and sentenced in January 2021 to two consecutive life sentences plus 10 years. (report)
  5. December 19: Adalberta Chavez Ruiz died in the same incident.
  6. December 25: The remains of Christian Boyle, 18, missing since December 12, were found with his car off of Cold Branch Road between Rosa and Susan Moore. Boyle was a suspect in the December 10 shooting death of Terrell Guy in Birmingham. Boyle's death was ruled a homicide. (report)

Calhoun County

  1. May 18: Debra Higginbotham, 36, was one of two persons shot to death in a home on the 3500 block of Truman Avenue in Anniston. Another person was wounded in the shootout. No arrest. (report)
  2. May 18: Justin Copeland, 23, was the second person shot to death in the same incident.
  3. July 13: Anthony Marquarius Fluker, 30, was wounded in a shooting on the 400 block of West 29th Street in Anniston. He was taken to a local hospital and then flown to UAB Hospital by helicopter, but was pronounced dead on arrival. No arrest. (report)
  4. July 23: Travis Frost, 73, was beaten and shot to death at his home on Rabbittown Road south of Piedmont following a reported break-in. Jeffrey Jamall Briskey was captured in West Virginia and charged with murder. He was convicted of felony murder in June 2022 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Sicondria Michala "C.C." Carter was arrested with him and charged with hindering prosecution. Rhimington Otarivs Johnson was also sought. He was arrested in April 2018 in Atlanta. (report)
  5. July 23: Joshua Moody, 23, Frost's grandson, was also killed in the same incident.
  6. August 14: James W. Byrd Jr, 36, was found shot to death in an SUV parked at the Lenlock Shopping Center in Anniston. LeQuinton Jermaine King was arrested in Pleasant Grove in October and charged with his murder. King was released on bond, but returned to jail after being arrested for murder in Mobile in 2020.   7. September 3: Jeannie Williamon, 43, was shot to death, along with her sister, in their home on the 8100 block of Nisbet Street Northwest (Calhoun County Highway 204), just outside Jacksonville. Their mother, Brenda Williamon, apparently shot the two women while they slept, and then killed herself. (report)
  8. September 3: Alicia Williamon, 44, was killed in the same incident.
  9. November 1: Candice Weeks, 36, was found dead in a car on High Street in Anniston. (report)
  10. November 1: Jamee Almarez, 27, was shot to death by Anniston Police where were investigating Weeks' death. He arrived at the scene and began shooting at police, who returned fire. (report)
  11. December 14: Zondrick Foster, 22, was killed in a shootout at the Samco gas station at 1601 Front Street in Anniston. Another man was injured. Demario Burnett was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)

Chilton County

  1. July 25: Marsha Jasmine Westbrook, 22, was shot to death by a 32-year-old woman who was riding with her from South Alabama while they were stopped at the Chevron gas station on Chilton County Road 42 in Jemison. Khadija Egella Montgomery was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. September 14: An unnamed person was found in a home which burned near the junction of Chilton County Road 781 and Chilton County Road 203. Dustin Wade Martin was named as an arson suspect and was taken into custody for questioning. (report)
  3. November 2: Melissa Ann Cleckler, 27, was found dead at Egg Road and Butler Road in Clanton. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to a conviction. In early December Anthony Scott Germany was charged with "felony corpse abuse" in relation to moving Cleckler's body to where it was found. (report)

Coosa County

  1. December 4: Thomas Chandler, 87, was killed during an apparent robbery in Goodwater. LaDaniel Martel Tuck and LaToni Daniel were arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Cullman County

  1. March 25: Jeanie Cheryl Kent, 47, was found choked to death at the Days Inn on 4th Street Southwest in Cullman. Her boyfriend, William Lynn Smith, was arrested in Tennessee in December. He pleaded guilty to murder in 2018 and was sentenced to 37 years in prison. He was found dead in his cell at the Donaldson Correctional Facility in June 2023. (report)
  2. April 4: An unnamed male was shot at a home on Cullman County Road 1759 during what appeared to be a targeted home invasion. He was found dead in a pickup truck that had left the scene. The driver of the truck, believed to have been Robert L. Kimbrough, also called "Mater" or "Budder," fled on foot. The owner of the home suffered minor injuries. Kimbrough is sought as a "person of interest." No arrests or charges have been made. (report)
  3. May 3: Tiffiney Crawford, 32, founder of Mothers Helping Mothers, was found dead from what was initially believed to be suicide. Her husband, Jason DeWayne Crawford, was indicted by a grand jury in May 2018 for intentionally causing her death. He turned himself in at the Cullman County Detention Center. (report)
  4. May 7: Curtis Wilson, 15, was killed in a head-on crash on Cullman County Road 222. Bradford Neal Meeks, the driver of the other vehicle, was indicted in October for reckless murder, DUI, unsafe lane change, driving on the wrong side of the road and third-degree assault. He is also named as defendent in a wrongful death suit brought by Wilson's mother, who survived the collision. (report).
  5. May 14: Helen Virginia Duke, 75, was killed while walking along Schwaiger Road in Good Hope. She was struck by an SUV which left the scene. Larry Surrett, 58, was arrested and charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence and driving with a revoked license. (report)
  6. July 17: Steve Griffith, 73, was shot to death during an apparent break-in at his home on the 2300 block of Cullman County Road 1301 in Vinemont. (report)
  7. July 17: Patrick O. Walker, 45, the alleged perpetrator of the deadly home invasion, was killed at the scene by Griffith's wife, Jackie.
  8. December 25: Logan Trammell, 22, was killed when his father, who thought his pick-up truck was being stolen by a thief instead of borrowed by his son, fired at him. Donald Wayne Trammell was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of reckless manslaughter. (report)

Etowah County

  1. May 17: Anibal Cristobal Francisco, 23, was shot to death during an apparent robbery in a house on the 500 block of Taylor Street in Gadsden. A suspect seen fleeing from the home was captured after a foot chase, but has not yet been charged. (report)
  2. May 27: June Calvert was killed when her car was struck on Albert Rains Road in Gadsden. Larwance McEldredge Williams, the driver of the other car, was found to be speeding and under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. He was charged with reckless murder. (report)
  3. June 30: Dillon Presley Wilemon, 22, was stabbed to death during an argument at a home on the 5600 block of Little Cove Road in Boaz. Brandon Lee Blevins was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. (report)
  4. September 26: Kevin Charles Jones, 42, was shot to death at his home at 689 Sunset Trail in Boaz. Ty Jordan Kirkland and Avery Grizzard were arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  5. October 10: Derrick Scott Parham, 28, was shot to death, and a woman injured by gunfire, in a room at the Gadsden Inn & Suites on the 200 block of North Albert Raines Boulevard in Gadsden. A suspect has been identified, but not yet apprehended. (report)
  6. November 6: Tiffany Jean Johnson, 30, was shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide at 5835 Main Street in Hokes Bluff. Jonathon David Nabors was also found dead at the scene. (report)

Bessemer

  1. January 9: Julian Garcia, 21, was found shot to death in a wrecked car on the 3400 block of 9th Avenue North. Several shell casings were found in the parking lot of a nearby nightclub. Rogelio Vasquez is sought by a police as a person of interest. (report)
  2. January 22: Stacie Carroll Williams, 36, was one of two female passengers killed when a Ford SUV struck the car they were riding in at the intersection of 9th Avenue and 19th Street North. The driver of the car, Courtland Dion Griffin, had fled from a traffic stop because he mistakenly believed he was sought on outstanding warrants. He was being pursued by Bessemer police when the collision occurred. Griffin, who was briefly hospitalized with minor injuries, was charged with two counts of felony murder. (report)
  3. January 22: Amanda Lynn Hill Pigg, 37, was killed in the same incident.
  4. February 9: D'Andre Briggs, 19, was shot to death in an apparent drive-by near the Citgo gas station on 4th Avenue. Rakeen Ahmir Rembert, K'hari Nasyr Rembert and Danterrious Young Hill were arrested and charged with capital murder and attempted murder. The charges against Hill were later dismissed. Khari Rembert pleaded guilty to felony murder in 2021 and was sentenced to 20 years. Rakeen Rembert, whose detailed confession led to his brother's arrest, later recanted and was acquitted at trial in Judge David Carpenter's court in 2022. (report)
  5. March 20: Harley Beck, 5 1/2 months, died in hospice care. She had been born with a heroin addiction. Her mother, Krissy Beck, was arrested and charged with chemical endangerment causing death and with probation violation. (report)
  6. March 28: Cadarrius Lamartez Johnson, 24, was shot to death on the 200 block of Ash Avenue. Ahmad Thompson was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  7. July 24: Marcus Orlando Dancy, 32, was shot to death during an argument between two other men at the Stop & Go on Dartmouth Avenue. Tommy Lee Pratt, who apparently stepped in on behalf of the other man, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  8. August 5: Kevin Yelling, 47, was shot to death in his home at the Cloverdale Apartments on 12th Street South off Clarendon Avenue. His son, Charles Edward Yelling, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. (report)
  9. August 17: Quintrius Lee Jackson, 25, was shot to death during a gunfight at a Shell gas station at 2801 9th Avenue North Bessemer (Bessemer Super Highway). Samuele Marquis Walker was charged with capital murder. He was granted a hearing before Judge Reginald Jeter to provide evidence that he reasonably believed his life was in danger and is therefore entitled to have the charges against him dismissed.   10. October 1: Jadrakus Antony Morris, 28, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered on the 2400 block of Berkley Avenue. Another woman was injured nearby. Eric Dewayne Burts was arrested in November and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  11. November 6: Quinton Lee Sims, 26, was shot to death at a home on the 1000 block of Dartmouth Avenue in an apparent domestic dispute. Andrew Bernard Jeffery was arrested and charged with murder. He pleaded guilty before Judge Thomas Thrash in April 2024 and was given a 20 year split sentence with a minimum of five years in prison and five more on probation. (report)
  12. November 14: Gloria Harris Parrish, 66, was found stabbed to death at her home on the 2100 block of Fairfax Avenue during an apparent robbery. Howard "Bubba" Seay Jr was arrested in January 2018 and charged with capital murder. The charge was bound over to a grand jury in February. (report)
  13. November 20: Ricky James McKeithan, 52, was shot on the 1000 block of 12th Street North and died later at UAB Hospital. Kyler Deshard Hatter was arrested and charged with murder.
  14. November 22: Jerry Wayne Clements, 60, was found shot to death near the intersection of 10th Avenue North and 17th Street North. Three people were questioned about the shooting, which appears to have been self-defense during an attempted robbery. (report)

Brighton

  1. March 19: Tyshun Tyree Miller, 18, was shot on the 1400 block of Clay Street and died from his wounds at UAB Hospital. An initial suspect turned himself in, but charges were dropped after witnesses implicated two others. Deandre Moore and Hendarius Jamal Jones were subsequently arrested and charged with capital murder. A third suspect, Jermiah Benson, was indicted in February 2018 and taken into custody a few weeks later. The charges against Jones and Benson were withdrawn in October 2019. (report)
  2. May 21: Misty Sheffield Martinez, 41, was shot to death during an attempted carjacking on the 1200 block of Kelly Street. The driver of the car she was riding in was also shot. He identified Madarius Warren as the shooter. Warren was arrested and charged with capital murder and attempted murder. (report)
  3. June 14: Ullesis Keanu Howard, 19, was found dead on Crawford Avenue in Birmingham's East Brownville neighborhood. Investigators believe he was killed in Brighton and the body dumped on the street from a car. No arrest. (report)
  4. June 15: Eric Dewayne Dalton, 39, was shot to death outside his home on the 4000 block of Council Avenue. No arrest. (report)

Center Point

  1. February 25: Jonas Maldonado, 31, was found shot to death in his pick-up truck which had crashed into a utility pole at Center Point High School. Investigators believe he was shot elsewhere and drove to that location. No arrest. (report)
  2. February 27: Janet Renae Shaw, 36, was found strangled to death in her home in the Parkway Mirage Apartments on the 1800 block of Center Brook Lane. Willie Bell Jr was taken into custody at the scene and charged with capital murder. He was convicted in Laura Petro's court in October 2018 and sentenced to life without parole. (report)
  3. September 20: Toney Felix Myers Jr, 39, was found behind the wheel of a crashed vehicle at on Parkway East at Huffman Road. He died later at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered during a shootout at a home on the 100 block of 14th Avenue Northwest. Myers is believed to have gone to the home looking for a girlfriend. Kevin Lewayne Speakman was arrested a day later at a motel in Irondale. He was indicted for murder in May 2018. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in February 2020 and was sentenced to 20 years by Judge Alaric May. (report)

Fairfield

  1. January 18: Tyron Bennet, 17, was shot to death on the 800 block of Valley Road while on his way to school. No arrest. (report)
  2. February 15: Eric Dial, 18, was shot to death outside his house on 43rd Street. Marquis Bell and Phillip Moore have been charged with his murder. Moore remains at large. (report)
  3. March 2: Ronald Ross, 35, was found shot to death outside a vacant house at 4117 Lloyd Noland Parkway. No arrest. (report)
  4. July 9: Carlos Manuel Flores, 27, was found shot to death in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked on the 700 block of 39th Place. No arrest. (report)
  5. September 16: Michael Eugene Stevens, 46, was shot to death after a gunfight between two vehicles on the 5000 block of Gary Avenue. The incident in apparent retaliation for an earlier hit-and-run in Midfield. Jermaine Curtis Boswell was convicted of capital murder in Judge David Carpenter's court. (report)
  6. September 25: Rodrequis Antwon Green, 26, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered the previous evening at the Chevron gas station on Lloyd Noland Parkway. A suspect has been identified, but not yet arrested. (report)
  7. October 13: Taylor Watts, 31, was found shot to death near the former Fairfield First Baptist Church on the 4600 block of Carnegie Avenue. Dereon Jacquon Busby was arrested in early November and charged with murder. (report)
  8. December 4: D'Mario Hall, 2 months, 24 days old, was declared brain-dead at UAB Hospital. His injuries were suffered during a fight between his parents (both deaf) at Mattie Gill Jackson Gardens public housing community. Four other children were taken into the care of Child Protective Services. The mother, Ratunda Smith, was initially charged with aggravated child abuse, but the charge was upgraded to murder in January 2018. (report)

Gardendale

  1. July 12: Dana Reeves Lever, 50, was one of three family members murdered methodically by her ex-husband, Kenneth Dion Lever, outside her home at 4172 Willow Bend Drive in the Peachtree Crossings subdivision. He used a .40-caliber handgun, firing off fifteen rounds. His daughter, Kristen, was in the house at the time, but fled to a neighbor's house and was not killed. Lever, who lived in Pensacola, Florida, was free on bail from charges relating to two incidents of sexual assault with a minor in York County, Pennsylvania. Dana had been granted a protection from abuse order on Kristen's behalf in December 2016. After the murders, Lever fled to Escambia County, Florida and, after meeting with a minister, shot himself in the head in the parking lot of a Pensacola area credit union. He died at the scene.   2. July 12: Bonnie Reeves Foshee, 65, the older sister of Dana Lever, was killed in the same incident.
  3. July 12: Don Foshee, 69, the husband of Bonnie Foshee, was killed in the same incident.
  4. December 19: Brenston Marteze Prince, 41, was shot to death in a domestic incident at his home on the 700 block of Twin Ridge Drive. One person was taken into custody at the scene, but no charges have been announced. (report)

Homewood

  1. August 19: Thomas Justin Walton, 32, was shot to death by a Homewood Police Department officer during a struggle in the parking lot of the Extended Stay America - Birmingham - Wildwood at 40 State Farm Parkway. Walton allegedly grabbed the officer's Taser and used it on him before he was shot and killed. (report)
  2. October 12: John Robert Payne, 35, was shot to death by a Homewood Police Department officer in an exchange of gunfire during a chase from the parking lot of Allsouth Appliance at 345 State Farm Parkway in the Wildwood North shopping center. One officer was wounded in the fray. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the shooting. (report)
  3. December 14: Tony Lamont Jackson, 48, was shot to death during an apparent domestic argument at 212 Robert Jemison Road. Two people were taken in for questioning, but no charges have been announced. (report)

Hoover

  1. June 5: Shunoah Seantel Turner, 26, was found beaten to death in his home in the Renaissance at Galleria apartments on Crowne Chase Parkway off Galleria Woods Drive. His roommate, Ledarius Jaquad Peterson, fled the scene in Turner's car. He was arrested in Bessemer and charged with murder. Peterson was killed in an assault in the Jefferson County Jail in February 2019. (report)
  2. September 21: Levi Ellise Pointer, 2, died as a result of a skull fracture suffered at home in the Retreat at Rocky Ridge apartments. Her mother's boyfriend, Dlonta Khalil Melton, was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted on the lesser felony charges of reckless manslaughter and aggravated child abuse in Judge Theresa Pulliam's court in August 2019. (report)
  3. December 26: Tyric Savion Toodle, 18, was shot to death in the parking lot of his home at the Elevation Hoover apartments on Little Valley Road off of Lorna Road. Investigators determined the shooting took place during an attempted robbery during a planned drug deal. Toodle's alleged accomplices, Isaiah Jovan Flowers and an unnamed 15-year-old, were arrested and charged with murder. The shooter has been identified and is cooperating with authorities (report)

Hueytown

  1. July 10: Maria Jocelyn Angula Goodwin, 55, was found stabbed and beaten to death in her home on the 1300 block of 25th Avenue. Investigators believe she may have been killed two days earlier. Her son, Carl "Brandon" Goodwin, 30, also lived at the house and was found unconscious at the scene. When he was resuscitated he claimed that demons had told him to kill his mother. He was taken into custody for psychiatric evaluation and later charged with murder. He pleaded guilty to that charge in 2022, and sentenced by Judge David Carpenter to a 20-year suspended sentenced with five years of probation, with credit for time served before trial. He was released into the custody of the JBS Mental Health Authority for ongoing treatment. (report)
  2. October 6: Tafari Shalamon Simmons, 32, was found dead from gunshot wounds near the 6400 block of Johns Road. Danny Lemar Hendrix was identified as a suspect. He was taken into custody at in March 2018 on unrelated charges in Franklin County, Texas. (report)

Irondale

  1. May 26: Drakkar Fontez Avery Christian, 26, was shot to death in the back yard of a house on the 1500 block of Monticello Road in a mistaken dispute over a woman who lives there. Broderick Lewayne Morgan turned himself in to police and was charged with murder. He was convicted at trial in July 2018. (report)
  2. November 29: Betty Patricia Watkins, 71, was found strangled to death inside her home at the Village at Grants Mill apartments on Beacon Drive. John Hershel Hagood, with whom she had a romatinc relationship, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. A grand jury indicted him in February 2018. (report)
  3. November 30: Marquez Andrea Square, 39, was killed when his Chevrolet Cruze was struck by another vehicle at John Rogers Drive and U.S. Highway 78. Juan Flores Barrueta was determined to have been driving under the influence and was charged with vehicular manslaughter. (report)

Leeds

  1. October 5: Johnny Roy Stokes Jr, 40, was shot to death at his home on the 1000 block of Melissa Avenue in the Cahaba Hills subdivision during a shootout with Leeds police officers. Police were responding to a report of a dog being shot and encountered stokes after following the sound of gunfire. Stokes fired at the officers, who returned fire, killing him. The incident is being reviewed by the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation. (report)

Midfield

  1. April 15: Brandon Morquese Hudson, 33, was found shot to death in the parking lot of the Bargain Butcher on the 1400 block of Woodward Road. Investigators determined that he was killed elsewhere and his body was dumped at that location. Two other victims from the same shooting survived. Andrew Haweis Goldsmith IV was charged with two counts of capital murder and two counts of attempted murder. Goldsmith was acquitted at trial in August 2019. (report)
  2. April 22: Brandon Durrell Conwell, 31, was one of two men shot to death during an argument over a mobile phone outside his house at 321 Woodward Road. Corey Marcell McGhee fled the scene in a rented Chevrolet Equinox. He was charged with two counts of capital murder, and taken into custody from an apartment on U.S. Highway 280 by U.S. Marshals days later. McGhee pleaded guilty to felony murder in Judge David Carpenter's court in November 2021 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. (report)
  3. April 22: Larry Vincent Price Jr, 42, was the second person killed in the same altercation.
  4. September 5: Saevon Harrison, 3, died at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery from injuries suffered in at least two incidents in June 2016 at his home in Midfield. His father, Dominic Xavier Moore, was initially charged with aggravated child abuse. After Harrison's death, a grand jury indicted Moore on capital murder and felony murder charges. (report)

Mulga

  1. November 14: Jeffery Douglas Jones, 52, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered four days earlier in a shooting on the 200 block of 1st Avenue. The shooter left the scene in a black Chevrolet Tahoe. No arrest. (report)

Tarrant

  1. January 31: Marcus Jermaine Felder, 30, died at UAB Hospital a day after being shot while leaving a house near the intersection of Prosh Avenue and Cambron Street where he had gone with his brother to try to retrieve a stolen vehicle. Joshawn Darnell McCall is alleged to have fired at their car as they left after an argument. He was arrested and charged with capital murder. The case was placed before a grand jury in April. While awaiting trial, McCall was found incompetent to stand trial due to mental defect. He was placed on a waiting list to be admitted to the Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility in Tuscaloosa. In March 2020 McCall was released on bond. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office appealed successfully for his bond to be revoked and he was re-arrested shortly afterward. report)
  2. August 11: Ralph 'Li Ralph' Woodfin III, 17, the nephew of then Birmingham mayoral candidate Randall Woodfin and son of Ralph Woodfin III, who was murdered in 2012, was shot to death on the back porch of a house at 1434 Thomason Avenue. The shooter, Daniel Lee Jelks, a rapper who performs as "Two Gunz Vito", claimed that he fired in self-defense during an attempted robbery, but investigators concluded that the shooting was part of an argument over stolen guns and a car. Jelks was subsequently indicted for murder. His first trial, held in June 2018 in Laura Petro's court, ended in a hung jury. Jelks was acquitted at retrial in March 2019. (report)
  3. October 5: Robert Eugene Pearmon, 58, died at UAB Hospital from injuries suffered when he was run over at 5th Avenue and 11th Street in Robinwood. Joshua Ray Allen, who had been involved in a dispute with Pearmon, put the victim in his car afterward and drove around for several hours before seeking medical assistance. Allen, who had previously been arrested and charged with first-degree assault and violation of the terms of his probation, was indicted for intentional murder by a grand jury in February 2018. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter before Judge Michael Streety in April and was given a 20 year split sentence with a minimum of five years to serve. (report)
  4. October 15: Calvin Sweeney, 43, was shot to death from a passing car as he left the Chevron gas station at 2525 Pinson Valley Parkway on foot. No arrest. (report)

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. March 15: Christy Lynn Kelly Cook, 39. was found dead on the bedroom floor of a home on the 2000 block of Rock Mountain Drive in Rock Mountian Lakes. She had been shot twice. The body was discovered by the homeowner, who often works out of town and had last been in the house on March 5. Cook and her boyfriend had apparently broken into the vacant home shortly after she was last seen on March 7. Her truck was found in Keener, Etowah County. The boyfriend, Anthony Gene McClellan, was treated for disorientation when he was picked up wandering around the vicinity of a liquor store in Attalla. When questioned about Cook, he claimed to have shot her (twice) accidentally. He was charged with capital murder during a burglary. He pleaded guilty to felony murder before Judge David Carpenter in October 2019 and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, but without credit for time already served. (report)
  2. July 3: Carlos Danyell Cole (or Westbrook), 22, was shot to death in a shootout at Black Diamond Paving on Old Jasper Highway in Bagley. An employee of the company came in to work on the holiday and went to investigate a car parked in some tall grass. One of two occupants of the car fire shots at him and he returned fire, killing one and injuring the other, who was found nearby by Jefferson County Sheriff's Office deputies. Kenneth Rhodes was questioned and claimed to have fired in self-defense during an attempted robbery. Investigators were unable to corroborate his account, determined that he was operating an illegal gambling operation at the site, and charged him with capital murder in July 2018. Later, investigators concluded that Cole's intent was to commit armed robbery. After a "Stand Your Ground" hearing in February 2020, Judge Stephen Wallace accepted prosecutors' motion to dismiss the murder charges against Rhodes. (report)
  3. July 8: Gary A. Williams, 62, died from stab wounds suffered on June 10 during an assault at his residence, a camper on the 9400 block of Old Tennessee Pike Road. Victor Ray Duboise was arrested. He waived a preliminary hearing and his case was bound over to a grand jury, which returned a charge of intentional murder. (report)
  4. September 15: Stephen Douglas Crump, 38, was shot to death during an attempted home invasion on the 200 block of Bayview Drive in Bayview. The homeowner who fired the shot was not charged. An accomplice, Horace D. Stokes, believed to have been the getaway driver, fled the scene in a pickup truck. He was arrested and charged with murder. Another accomplice, Jason Dale Boatwright, was identified nearly a year later from DNA found on a mask worn during the incident. He was arrested in August 2018 and charged with murder, second-degree assault, burglary and robbery.(report)
  5. October 14: Korry Evins, 40, was shot to death outside an apartment on Crabapple Lane in Forestdale. No arrest. (report)
  6. November 24: Janice Hopkins Stamps, 66, was shot to death at a home on the 1100 block of Hudson Avenue in Eastern Valley. Her brother, Thomas Hopkins, told deputies that he pulled his gun and fired because she was yelling at him. He was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  7. November 25: Keith Duncan, 44, was shot to death at a home on the 2700 block of Darlene Circle in Grayson Valley after an argument that broke out during a football party. Clifford Montez Hinkle was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder. He was indicted for that charge by a grand jury in September 2018. (report)

Shelby County

  1. June 21: Corey Walker, 25, was killed in a shooting on Shelby County Highway 203 in Montevallo's Aldrich neighborhood. Another person was injured. No arrest. Governor Kay Ivey's office has offered a $5,000 reward for information about the murder. (report)
  2. July 31: Michael Francis Xavier Lee, 34, was killed in an auto collision on the 4600 block of Valleydale Road. The driver of the car he was riding in, Felicia Jean Willcutt, was indicted in June 2018 for reckless murder, second-degree assault and driving under the influence. (report)
  3. August 12: Samuel Julius Nave, 30, was shot to death in a domestic dispute at his home on the 300 block of Shelby County Highway 437 in Sterrett. Another occupant of the home was taken into custody as the investigation proceeds to determine if charges will be filed. (report)
  4. August 16: Catalina Estillado, also known as Eva Saenz, died from injuries suffered in a workplace accident at ABC Polymer Industries at 545 Elm Street in Helena. Her husband, Pablo Crescencio, successfully sued the company and was awarded $3 million in damages. Judge Elisabeth French ruled that vice president of operations Dean Leader and director of operations Will Durrall were liable for removing safety guards, removing automatic shut-offs, and not providing safety guidelines in Spanish for Spanish-speaking workers. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) also cited the company, and the U.S. Department of Justice determined that Estillado's death was caused by her employers' willful failure to follow an OSHA standards, and charged the company with a federal misdemeanor. ABC pleaded guilty before Judge Annemarie Carney Axon and was sentenced to 2 years of probation and to pay over $400,00 in restitution and fines. (report)
  5. November 2: The remains of Melissa Ann Cleckler, 27, were found near Egg and Butter Road off of Oak Drive in Columbiana. Anthony Scott Germany and Allen Dion Jones have been arrested and charged with moving her body. (report)

St Clair County

  1. July 5: Joe Montgomery, 89, was shot to death at his home on Montgomery Drive in Ashville. His grandson, Claude Henry Williams Jr, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He was indicted on that charge in December. (report)
  2. August 21: Michael Collins, 46, a librarian at Odenville Middle School, was found stabbed and strangled to death in his home at 2587 Evergreen Road off U.S. Highway 411 between Odenville and Ashville. D'Kota Chance Griffin, who had a brief romantic relationship with Collins, was arrested in Anniston and charged with murder. (report)
  3. October 23: Billy Joe Saffold, 55, was stabbed to death on Cook Springs Cutoff Road in Pell City. James Earl Castleberry and Charla Johnson were taken into custody. Castleberry was charged with murder. Charges against Johnson are pending. (report)
  4. November 23: Jackie Germaine Ragland, 32, was fatally shot by Pell City Police Department officers responding to an armed robbery call at a Texaco station on the 1800 block of Martin Street in Pell City. Ragland ran toward officers with his gun pointed and was hit in the torso by the officer's bullet. The death is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. (report)

Talladega County

  1. July 12: Ladarius Dontrell Jackson, 25, died after an altercation with a Sylacauga Police Department officer who was investigating a probable drug crime during a traffic stop in the Fairmont community. Jackson attempted to flee on foot and was overtaken with the help of a Taser. He was transported by ambulance to the Coosa Valley Medical Center and later pronounced dead. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is examining the case and the officer's conduct. (report)
  2. August 1: Curtis Chadwick Jackson, 44, was shot at the Drew Court public housing community and died later at the Coosa Valley Medical Center. Barry Terrell Knapper was arrested and charged with capital murder. Additional suspects are sought. (report)
  3. December 13: Chre'sean Ching, 15 months old, died at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center from injuries suffered in a home on the 900 block of Sloan Avenue in Talladega. His death is being investigated as a homicide, but no charges have been filed. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. February 5: Alex Dewayne Bedwell, 38, was shot to death in the parking lot near his home in the Emory Woods Condominiums on Veteran's Memorial Parkway in Tuscaloosa. The shooting apparently followed an argument over a woman. Dillon Michael Lee was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. (report)
  2. February 13: Richard Lee Rawlins, 34, was shot to death during an argument in the yard of a house at 14835 South Rosser Road. David Demond Hinton, resident at that address, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. March 28: The remains of Emmett Kyzer, 82, who had been reported missing in June 2016, were found off of Ed Stephens Road and Progress Drive and identified by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in January 2018. Kyzer had been beaten and stabbed with an ice pick, then wrapped in a plastic tarpaulin, which was set on fire. Clifford Sinclair Madison was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. May 7: Branden Moss, 23, was shot to death after attempting to break up a fight in a parking lot across from the 3000 Bar on the 600 block of Paul W. Bryant Drive in Tuscaloosa. Markis Russell was arrested the same day and charged with murder. (report)
  5. May 21: Christopher Deon Rhone, 29, was killed by gunfire during an argument on the 1700 block of 41st Avenue Northeast in Holt. Dominique Maurice Ball was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder. (report)
  6. June 21: Darrell James Pettie, 54, was killed in a hit-and-run collision while he was standing outside his truck, which had been involved in another accident, on I-59 near mile marker 98. Christopher Carrizal, who fled the scene on foot, was indicted by a grand jury for criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death. (report)
  7. July 17: The remains of Jennifer Raven Nevin, 23, were found off of a dirt road near the intersection of Watermelon Road and Phelps Road northeast of Tuscaloosa. She had been beaten and shot. Rashad Lewis, Kendrick Ky'Andre Marshall and Vida Milagros Confetti-Duenas were arrested and charged. They have admitted being involved in Nevin's death and explained that they believed she was setting them up for a robbery. Confetti-Duenas pleaded guilty to capital murder during the course of first-degree kidnapping in September 2022. (report)
  8. July 18: Lester Williams, 69, was found dead at home on the 1600 block of T. Y. Rogers Jr Avenue in Tuscaloosa. There was evidence of a break-in. Cody Williams and Fernandez Britton Jr were arrested in October and charged with murder. (report)
  9. July 25: Mona Matthews Gordon, 71, was found shot to death in a car parked at her home at 5400 Bluegrass Parkway in Tuscaloosa. Her son, Ryan David Matthews, was found dead beside the house from an apparent self-inflicted wound, fired from the same gun. (report)
  10. September 3: Calvin Pruitt Jr, 38, was found shot to death at the Southern Oaks Trailer Park at 2300 Crabtree Road in Tuscaloosa. Another man was severely beaten. Antwan Laderrick Adams turned himself in to police and was charged with murder. Heather Elizbeth Bostic was also charged with assault in connection with the incident. (report)
  11. September 18: Bobby Lee Herrod Jr, 37, was fatally wounded in a shooting at the Winston Mart at 2503 [Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and died later at DCH Tuscaloosa. Lornzo Maurice Polke was arrested in October and charged with capital murder. (report)
  12. September 24: David Blake Milligan, 27, died at DCH Regional Medical Center of wounds suffered in an assault on the 2400 block of University Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. Lesley Ray Kelley was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  13. November 12: Christopher McCrory, 27, was found shot to death on the 15000 block of Aimee Drive in Coaling. After an investigation determined that the shooting was the result of a disagreement between families, David Eugene Mitchell was identified as the suspected shooter. He turned himself in. (report)
  14. December 9: An unnamed male, 56, was shot to death outside a home in the 5000 block of Clover Road, off U.S. Highway 11 in Tuscaloosa. Aderami Onasayna was charged with murder and Cedric Williams was charged with manslaughter. (report)

Walker County

  1. March 29: Giuliana Susan Grace Ramirez, 14 months, died as a result of physical abuse and being left in a hot car at 2713 Leonard Chapel Road in Carbon Hill. Her mother, Memory Ryan Vieyra, was charged with murder and aggravated child abuse. (report)
  2. June 2: Deborah West, 49, was shot to death by her husband, Steven West, at their home on Pineywoods Sipsey Road. West then killed himself. The couple's two children, 10 and 19, were at home. (report)
  3. June 20: Dustin Michael Alexander, 25, died at Grandview Medical Center from blunt force trauma to the head. He was found in his grandmother's driveway at 6181 Walker County Highway 195 north of Manchester. (report)
  4. July 22: Jalayah Hackman, 20, was killed by a stray bullet from a shootout between one of her cousins and another man at a post-wedding reception party on the 200 block of Church Street in Yerkwood. Keiel Natwand "Lele" James and Antonio Rossell Mongtomery were arrested. James was charged with attempted murder and Montgomery with first-degree assault. Another shooter was also identified and is sought as a person of interest. (report)
  5. September 16: James Johnson Woods, died from sepsis, malnutrition and pneumonia at his home at 40 Austin Circle in Dora. His caregiver, Sharon Kay Lewis, was charged with manslaughter, second-degree elder abuse, and neglect. (report)
