This is a List of homicides in 2018, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District in 2018. At least 237 homicides were reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and adjudicated through the courts.

Bibb County

  1. May 15: Jeveria Odess McCall, 35, was stabbed to death at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent. Fellow inmate Keandre Derrod Houston was charged with his murder. (report)

Blount County

  1. March 14; An unnamed male, 28, was shot to death during a struggle with his grandmother which broke out while she was helping him set up a campsite on Adams Road in Blountsville. A grand jury is deliberating on whether a criminal indictment is warranted. (report)
  2. March 15: An unnamed male, 20s, was shot to death during a struggle with his father which broke out while the father was threatening to kill himself near Elvester Road south of Hayden. The father was detained for questioning, but no charges have been filed. (report)
  3. September 18: Rodger Dale Ledlow, 66, was killed in a head-on collision of two pick-up trucks on Alabama State Highway 79, 7 miles south of Locust Fork]]. Johnny Lee Hobson pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter and first-degree assault and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. (report)

Calhoun County

  1. January 18: Heather Parker, 19, was one of three people shot to death in front of her father's home on Chinch Creek Road in the White Plains community northeast of Anniston. Her father, Anthony Wayne Parker, confessed by phone to his sister, and then shot himself in front of the Rabbittown General Store on Rabbittown Road. (report)
  2. January 18: Anthony Parker's son, 12, was killed in the same incident.
  3. January 18: Brandon Roberts, 20, Heather's fiancé, was killed in the same incident.
  4. February 15: Connie Burgess, 41, was killed when hit by a train near Cooper Circle in Anniston. Train crew told investigators that her husband, Benny Burgess, caused her to be intentionally struck. He was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. (report)
  5. June 2: The remains of Kelsey Abigail Williams, 26, were found behind a burning trailer behind the former R.J.'s Gas Station near U.S. Highway 431 in southern Glencoe. She died from blunt force trauma before her body was burned. Tony Putman and Timothy Putman were arrested two weeks later and charged with murder. (report)
  6. July 18: Teuntay Pointer, 32, was found shot to death on the 2300 block of Moore Avenue in Anniston. A relative, William Point, was taken into custody. (report)

Chilton County

  1. July 8: William Arlond Price, 56, and his brother, were shot to death by a property owner during an apparent burglary attempt. No arrest. (report)
  2. July 8: Darryl Lee Price, 54, was killed in the same incident.
  3. August 4: Tonya Sherre Anderson, 35, was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by Carey Roger Glenn while walking on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 31 outside Friends Steakhouse in Clanton. Glenn, who claimed to have believed he struck a deer and left the scene, was not charged. Anderson's husband, Jason Michael Todd, was arrested and charged with manslaughter by Clanton Police Department traffic homicide investigator David Hicks. A grand jury indicted him on that charge in February 2019. Todd's attorneys filed a motion to quash ahead of the criminal trial. The Circuit Court dismissed the charges with prejudice, citing a lack of probable cause for criminal prosecution. Todd subsequently sued Hicks and another officer, and the City of Clanton, for violating his civil rights by prosecuting him without probably cause. U.S. District Court Judge R. Austin Huffaker Jr dismissed three of the four counts. The suit for malicious prosecution against Hicks proceeded in February 2023. (report)
  4. October 21: Alex Postell, 21, was shot to death at Ollie Park, behind the Clanton YMCA in Clanton. Jermink Lykes was convicted of manslaughter before Judge Ben Fuller in October 2022. (report)

Coosa County

Cullman County

  1. February 25: Kelsey Marie Treadaway, 31, died from blunt force trauma after her Toyota Camry was struck from behind by a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Brandon Adam Hamm on I-65 in Good Hope. Hamm, who drove away after the collision, was arrested and charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident. (report)
  2. March 26: The remains of Daniel Ray Osborn II, last seen on February 3, were found buried in a yard in Fairview. Andrew Jacob Maresh and Tyler Stephen Hudson were arrested and charged with murder. Maresh's grandmother, Susan Winton Smith, was indicted for murder in July. Maresh was convicted of intentional murder in October 2021. (report)
  3. December 18: Bradley Ray Patterson, 39, was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a box truck on Alabama State Highway 157 near the I-65 Exit 310 overpass. The truck driver, Brett Amerson, fled the scene. He was located and taken into custody and found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, and to have had 11 prior DUI arrests on his record. He was convicted on charges of reckless murder, DUI, and leaving the scene. Judge Martha Williams sentenced him to 131 years in prison. (report)

Etowah County

  1. January 4: Aaron Joe "A. J." Huff, 18, was shot to death while in a vehicle in at Hoke Street and Litchfield Avenue in Gadsden. The incident followed a previous altercation. Tyler Michael Abbott, Kalab Blake Whitworth, Jessie James Altman, Lonterry Orlando Harrison, and Broderick Pearson were all arrested and charged with capital murder. Whitworth was shot to death at a party near Attalla in October 2019. (report)
  2. January 7: Kevin L. Winston, 48, was shot to death while in a vehicle outside a house on the 2800 block of Shahan Avenue in Gadsden. The shooting arose from an argument. Albert Peter "Lucky" Gargone was convicted of capital murder and agreed to waive his right to appeal in exchange for a sentence of life in prison. (report)
  3. January 24: Joey Walker, 59, was one of two men found dead inside their apartment on the 800 block of Third Street Southwest (U.S. Highway 11 in Attalla. Joseph Randel Brown, an acquaintance of the victims, was arrested and charged with capital murder, aggravated animal cruelty, and first-degree burglary. (report)
  4. January 24: Johnny Whisenant, 49, was found dead in the same incident.
  5. January 25: An unnamed male died after being shocked with a taser during an altercation outside the Etowah County Sheriff's Office. The Oxford Police Department is investigating the incident. (report)
  6. January 26: An unnamed male, 33, was shot to death in an apparent domestic dispute at a home on the 1100 block of Scenic Drive. A female suspect was taken into custody at the scene, but has not yet been charged. (report)
  7. August 8: Cheyenne Humphries, 22, was shot to death and a man was injured during an altercation at a home on Clanton Street in Attalla. Khalil Devadra Smith was arrested in East Gadsden and charged with murder. (report)

Fayette County

  1. May 1: Hernan Antonio Padilla, 55, was found shot to death during a robbery at his home on Fayette County Road 63 in Studdards Crossroads. Another male victim was found at the home. Michael Even Council, Lazaro Moran, Lindettia Lowery, Brandon Dewayne Lowery. and Brittany Bell-Spates were arrested and charged with capital murder. Council pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder in July 2022 and was given two life sentences. Moran and Lowery pleaded guilty in October 2022. Moran was given two life sentences and Lowery two 25-year sentences, to be served concurrently. (report)
  2. Allen Clifford Sandlin, 56, was found dead in the same incident.

Bessemer

  1. January 13: LaRonald Cortez McDaniel, 21, was shot to death while sitting in a car with a woman in front of a residence on the 800 block of Gary Avenue. Investigators believe he was targeted in a drug-related dispute. Ebonee Sade Russell Malone was arrested in February and charged with capital murder. Willie Richard Williams was arrested in September 2021 and also charged with capital murder. (report)
  2. February 12: Timothy Wilson, 18, was shot to death while in a vehicle on the 700 block of Jefferson Avenue. The shooter, a female passenger in the car, had called 911 to report an assault before the shooting. She remained on the scene and was questioned, but has not been detained or charged. (report)
  3. February 23: Lottie Mitchell Evans, 64, was killed when her Toyota Corolla was struck by a Cadillac Escalade driven by Onassis Fitzgerald Scarbrough near the intersection of Dartmouth Avenue and 28th Street Bessemer. Scarbrough had stolen the Cadillac, with a toddler in the back seat, from a Stop-N-Go convenience store nearby. He struck two other vehicles before hitting Evans' car head-on and rolling onto his side. He was arrested and charged with murder and kidnapping. (report)
  4. February 28: Seddarrius Trimaine Chavers, 25, was shot to death on the 1900 block of Arlington Avenue. Zakerrius Kenissac Hale was arrested and charged with murder, but remains at large. (report)
  5. March 12: Daniel Laverne Beams, 41, was shot to death in his car and left outside the Economy Inn at 1113 9th Avenue Southwest. His car was recovered in Tuscaloosa. Alexandria Stephens was charged with manslaughter. Another suspect, Parker Drake Herron was charged with theft of property. (report)
  6. March 23: Devonte Rashaud Hunter, 22, was shot to death near the intersection of 27th Street and 7th Avenue North. No arrest. (report)
  7. April 4: Vincent Webster Cole, also known as Vincent Cortez Webster, 20, was shot to death near Berkley Terrace and Clarendon Avenue in the Southside Homes public housing complex. The shooter fled in a Chevrolet Trailblazer. No arrest. (report)
  8. April 14: Allen Jamichael Wilson, 24, was killed by a shotgun blast after an argument with a friend and coworker at a home on the 100 block of Deadrick Street. Joseph Lenair Burston was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a sawed-off shotgun. (report)
  9. April 22: Laila Reid, 2, died from blunt force trauma suffered during an incident outside her home on the 1000 block of Manor Circle off Morgan Road. Her father, Ira Reid, admitted to throwing an exercise weight through the car window during an argument with her mother, causing her injuries. He was charged with murder, throwing a dangerous object into a vehicle, and 2nd and 3rd degree domestic violence. (report)
  10. September 23: Quinton Lamar Riddle, 28, died at UAB Medical West from wounds suffered in a shootout at a home on the 4700 block of Little Drive. Mario Wormley, the suspected shooter, was also injured by gunfire and was treated at UAB Hospital. He was charged on September 25 with capital murder. He pleaded guilty to felony murder in August 2022 and was sentenced by Judge Reginald Jeter to serve 25 years in prison. (report)
  11. December 6: Mac Wayne Early, 37, who had served time for the 2000 murder of Excell Hollomann III, was found shot to death on the 10 block of Center Street in the Burstall community. Brandon Keenan Phillips was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Brighton

  1. December 26: Sylvester Allen, 68, was shot to death after confronting intruders at his residence on the corner of Parker Springs Street and Short Perry Avenue. Three suspects were seen leaving the scene in a silver Nissan Altima. Nathaniel Shiheem Hamilton was arrested in January and charged with capital murder. (report)

Center Point

  1. April 10: Gavan Jamal Averhart, 30, was found shot to death in the driver's seat of an automobile on Hillview Lane Northwest in Center Point's Woodaire Estates subdivision. Ronnie Owens Davis was seriously injured and collapsed in a nearby yard. A third person, De'Erin Ward, was also wounded, and was taken to St Vincent's East in another vehicle. Ward told investigators that he had been picked up by the other two men in order to conduct a heroin transaction and that he returned fire after Averhart shot him first. Davis was charged with Averhart's murder under the "Felony Murder Rule". He was also wanted on several other outstanding warrants. Ward may also face charges. (report)
  2. June 28: Demico Laron Howard, 22, was fatally wounded in a shootout at an apartment building on the 1800 block of Bond Circle Northeast. The shooter was also wounded and was hospitalized. (report)
  3. October 22: Tarius Richardson, 28, was shot to death during an argument between a friend and a man she hired to repair her car at the Magnolia Trace Apartments on the 2100 block of Whetstone Court. The woman was also injured. Tyreese Nikita Crayton was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted in July 2021 on charges of provocation manslaughter and attempted murder, and sentenced to life without parole (report)
  4. November 1: Christopher James Burgay, 23, was found dead in the front yard of a home on the 1500 block of 2nd Place Northwest. No arrest. (report)

Clay

  1. February 11: Brandon Alexander Burpo, 17, was shot to death outside his home on the 4400 block of Winchester Hills Way in Clay's Winchester Hills subdivision. The shooting appears to have been a targeted retaliation for a robbery. Traquarius Malik Brannon was charged with capital murder and Jada Lyniese Williams was charged with felony murder. Those charges were confirmed by a grand jury in June. (report)
  2. May 5: Shaquille Tyra Crayton, 24, was shot to death at Cosby Lake Park. His girlfriend told authorities that he had assaulted her and she shot him in self defense. (report)

Fairfield

  1. January 13: Bradley Neil Watkins, 50, was killed by a stray bullet while in his 3rd floor room at the America's Best Inn & Suites on Kelco Place. The incident involved a group of teenagers that had congregated at the motel. Scores of rounds were fired in the shootout that may have been motivated by retaliation for an earlier incident. Several individuals were detained for questioning but no charges have been filed. (report)
  2. February 6: Terrence Tomez Turner, 22, was shot to death in a vehicle on the 4900 block of Farrell Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  3. February 15: Tony Alberigi, 59, general manager of Western Hills Mall, was killed in a major shootout between two groups outside the mall. Rashaan Cepadio Brown, Ronald Dewayne Weaver, and Anthony Treshun Johnson were arrested and charged with murder. Brown removed his ankle bracelet in October and fled the state. He was recaptured in May 2019. (report)
  4. July 9: Steven Lucas, 37, died at UAB Hospital from wounds received during a shootout on the 300 block of 54th Street. Christopher Allen Collins accompanied Lucas to the house, which they both fired upon in retribution for an earlier incident. They were both struck by return fire. Collins was charged with felony murder as an accomplice in violent crime that resulted in death. The residents who returned fire were not charged. (report)
  5. September 16: Ronnie Deandre Weaver, 23, was killed in a drive-by shooting at the Citgo gas station at the intersection of Valley Road and Gary Avenue. Malik Terrell McKinney was arrested and charged with murder. Another suspect, Edward Haywood, remains at large. (report)
  6. October 28: Ladarius De’Juan Whiteside, 19, was shot to death while he and some friends were playing with a gun at a house on the 500 block of Forest Drive. Xavier Thompson was charged with reckless manslaughter in his death. (report)
  7. December 25: Romero Deon McMorris, 27, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered during an argument with another man at the Demetrius C. Newton Gardens housing project on the 600 block of 55th Place. Desmond Martez Williams was arrested and charged with murder. A jury convicted hm on the lesser charge of provocation manslaughter in March 2022. Judge David Carpenter sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole. (report)
  8. December 30: Christian DeWayne Cook, 10 months, died at Children's Hospital from blunt force trauma to the head. His mother, Maya Nacole Freeman, was indicted in December 2020 on charges of manslaughter and aggravated child abuse. She was taken into custody in January 2021. (report)

Gardendale

  1. March 18: Theresa Lynn "Terri" Miller, 47, former manager of the Irish Deli, was found beaten to death in her home on the 400 block of Greenwood Avenue. Her boyfriend, Jon Rodney Bowden, was arrested a day later and charged with her murder. He was convicted in Judge Shanta Owens' court in July 2019. (report)

Homewood

  1. October 10: Cameron Deion "Cam" Bozman, 18, died from gunshot wounds suffered while driving on the offramp from I-65 North to Oxmoor Road late the previous night. A black four-door sedan was seen leaving the scene. $10,000 in reward money has been offered for information leading to an arrest. (report)

Hoover

  1. May 11: Tavarius Jamal Bryant, 22, was shot to death outside his home in The Cliffs at Rocky Ridge apartment complex on the 700 block of Wisteria Place. Oscar Lee Woods III was charged with capital murder. He was extradited from Mississippi in July. The charges were affirmed by a grand jury in January 2019. (report)
  2. May 11: Christopher Bryant, was pronounced dead on arrival after being dropped off at Princeton Baptist Medical Center with gunshot wounds. Investigators believe he and Woods were attempting to rob Tavarius Bryant (no relation), and that Christopher Bryant was killed by return fire. Woods was also charged with his accomplice's murder under Alabama law.
  3. October 21: Darryl Lavon Seay, 23, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered in front of the 2300 building at The Park at Hoover apartments on Rime Village Drive off Lorna Road. A 14-year-old suspect was arrested and charged. (report)
  4. November 22: E. J. Bradford Jr, 22, was shot to death by a Hoover Police officer following a shootout inside the Riverchase Galleria on Thanksgiving night. Bradford had pulled a gun during a chaotic response to another shooting that injured two people. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation that was passed up to the Attorney General of Alabama. (report)

Irondale

  1. June 7: Billie Bratcher Prewett, 73, was killed when her Volkswagen was broadsided by a Chevrolet driven by George Camille ShallahLembou on the Grants Mill Road exit from I-459 North. ShallahLembou, who was found to have been speeding, was charged with vehicular manslaughter. He was indicted by a grand jury for reckless manslaughter in January 2019. (report)
  2. September 21: Ching Kao, 77, was beaten to death along with his wife at the closed Siesta Motel at 2510 Crestwood Boulevard. Both were presumed dead based on surveillance video of a brutal beating in the course of a robbery. Steven Richard Mulkey, who had been working there to make repairs, was arrested in Staunton, Virginia and charged with capital murder. He told investigators where they could locate the Kaos' remains, and they were recovered in a wooded area about 40 yards off of Rex Lake Road in Leeds. Mulkey pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. He was convicted at trial before Judge Alaric May in April 2023 and sentenced to death. (report)
  3. September 21: Siu Mei Kao, 75, was attacked and killed in the same incident.

Lipscomb

  1. May 2: David Wayne Horn, 59, was found dead after a fire at his home on the 6400 block of 7th Street South. Evidence of an accelerant prompted an investigation into the possibility that of homicide. (report)

Midfield

  1. June 28: Terrence Wayne Scott, 28, was shot while in a car on the 1000 block of Rutledge Drive. He was taken to UAB Highlands where he was pronounced dead. No arrest. (report)

Morris

  1. March 12: Joel Nathan Murphree, 37, was shot to death at the home of his estranged wife in the Rolling Hills Village mobile home park off of Morris Majestic Road in the Berlin community. The wife was detained for questioning. (report)
  2. September 5: Mitchell Owen Buel, 33, was fatally wounded by gunshot after a Alabama Law Enforcement Agency highway patrolman chased him to 3rd Avenue in Morris after attempting to pull him over for aggravated speeding and reckless driving on Moncrief Road in Gardendale. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. (report)

Pleasant Grove

  1. December 4: An unborn child was killed when its mother, Marshae Jones, was shot during an argument in the parking lot of the Dollar General on Park Road. Investigators determined that Jones initiated the argument, which was over the father of the unborn child. Ebony Jemison, the shooter, was arrested and charged her with manslaughter. A grand jury declined to indict Jemison, whom they concluded fired in self-defense, and instead indicted Jones, the mother, on a charge of manslaughter. The indictment made national news. After reviewing the case, Jefferson County District Attorney Lynneice Washington dropped the charges against Jones. (report)

Sylvan Springs

  1. July 14: Keith Franklin Hilyer, 41, was found shot to death at the end of Oak Lane. Investigators determined that he and his wife, Amanda, had been arguing outside the house and that she into a neighbor's car, retrieved a handgun, and shot him. She was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder, breaking and entering, and theft. A judge bound those charges over to a grand jury for possible indictment. Keith Hilyer had been investigated for a domestic assault charge in January, but the charges were dismissed at Mrs Hilyer's request in March (report)

Tarrant

  1. July 9: Nathaniel Holder, 16, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered during an argument between cars on the 1100 block of Alabama Street the previous day. Hakeem Gamble was arrested and charged with capital murder. Judge Theresa Pulliam bound his case over to a grand jury, which indicted him on the capital murder charge on September 21. Gamble pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of felony murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. (report)

Trussville

  1. February 9: The remains of Joe Fred Skelton Jr, 47, were found under debris near Commerce Drive and U.S. Highway 11. Investigators believe his body was brought there and concealed, but there is no clear evidence that he died from homicide. No arrest. (report)

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. January 6: Jackie Harlan Roberts, 62, died at UAB Hospital after being shot in the shoulder by Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies during a standoff outside his sister's home on the 4800 block of Vernon Parkway near Grayson Valley. The cause of death was ruled a homicide. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident. (report)
  2. April 13: Jeremy Anthony "J. D." Davis, 38, was found shot to death in the passenger seat of a car parked outside the Midfield Police Department at 725 Bessemer Road in Midfield. The driver told law enforcement officers that he driven the victim to buy marijuana and was instructed to meet the seller at the end of Salina Avenue off Powder Plant Road west of Bessemer in unincorporated Jefferson County. Once there, an argument broke out and Davis was shot. The seller robbed the driver, and told him to leave. The driver brought the car to the police station in Midfield to seek help. Horace Earl Jackson was charged with Davis' murder, which may have been set up in retaliation for a previous robbery. Jackson turned himself in at the Jefferson County Jail. His wife, Courtney Danielle Carson Jackson was also charged with murder in May. (report)
  3. April 21: Habibba Moneque Walker, 45, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered a week earlier at her home on the 300 block of Trenton Street in McDonald Chapel. Dereck Jamaille Walker, her ex-husband and the father of two of her children, broke into the house and shot her twice. He fled to Escambia County, Florida where he confessed to the shooting during a traffic stop the next day. The case was bound over to a grand jury.(report)
  4. April 22: Laila Reid, 2, died of trauma after being struck by a 15 pound dumbbell that her father, Ira Shaondole Reid, threw into the child's mother's boyfriend's car on the 1000 block of Manor Circle off Morgan Road. He was initially charged with murder, but Judge David Carpenter sent the case to a grand jury to consider indictment for manslaughter. (report)
  5. April 30: Carlos Gray, 25, was shot to death at his home on Balboa Terrace in the Paradise Valley east of Pinson, between Clay and Chalkville. Investigators believe that he was shot during a robbery attempt, and that the suspected shooter was Darryl Thomas, who was found shot to death the following day. (report)
  6. May 1: Darryl Thomas, 21, was found dumped near 3rd Place and Avenue S near the Lipscomb and Bessemer city limits. His death and the kidnapping of another man are believed to have been carried out in retaliation for Carlos Gray's murder during a robbery. Four people have been taken into custody and are expected to be charged with first degree kidnapping and capital murder. (report)
  7. July 19: Austin Lee Nunn, 22, was found beaten and shot to death after an apparent robbery at a home on the 4200 block of Levine Avenue in Sayre Camp near Graysville. A 15 year-old suspect was arrested in August and charged with capital murder. (report)
  8. July 22: Jonathan Andrew Carroll, 29, was shot to death in an altercation near the 4000 block of Valley Ford Road in Adger. Scott Allen Pennington, who reported the shooting and led deputies to Carroll's body, claimed to have fired in self-defense. Other evidence led prosecutors to charge him with murder. (report)
  9. July 22: Robin Rae Caudill, 48, was found beaten to death in her home on the 4000 block of Ruff Road, off Sharon Church Road north of Pinson. Her husband, Arthur Leon McKinney Jr, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. A grand jury indicted him for intentional murder in February 2019. He remarried and was arrested and charged with first-degree domestic violence strangulation of his second wife in January 2020. He was ordered held without bail. McKinney was convicted of murder in June 2021 and sentenced by Judge Clyde Jones to serve 99 years in prison. (report)
  10. September 10: An unnamed male, 30s, was shot to death during a domestic argument at 3721 4th Street just sout of the Graysville town line. The suspected shooter was taken into custody at the scene. (report)
  11. September 10: Jack Eugene Blanks, 62, was shot to death at a home on Doss Drive off Shannon-Wenonah Road northwest of Shannon. He came to the house with two other people to confront the seller of a handgun about the delivery of a clip. Jason Kevin Henderson was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  12. September 23: Dezmend Cotton, 5 months, drowned in a bathtub at his home in the Hickory Ridge Apartments off of Murphree Road north of Tarrant. His father, Cordarius Cotton, had started a bath for him, then left the room to play video games. He was charged with reckless manslaughter. (report)

  14. November 13: An unnamed female was found shot to death at her home on the 1800 block of Woodvine Lane near Center Point. Her husband, Darius L. McDaniel, 31, was also found dead in an apparent murder-suicide. (report)
  15. December 31: Censere "C. J." Calhoun, 18, was pronounced dead following a shootout at the Marathon Pit Stop on the corner of Birmingport Road (Alabama State Highway 269) and McDonald Chapel Road in Minor. No arrest. (report)

Lee County

  1. July 31: Octavious Bennett, 21, was shot to death when a bullet penetrated into a home in the Hickory Haven Trailer Park on Crawford Road in Opelika. No arrest. A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest. (report)

Shelby County

  1. January 13: Kathleen Dawn West, 42, was found dead from blunt force trauma outside her home at 152 Greenwood Circle in Calera. Her husband, William "Jeff" West, was arrested in February. He was convicted of murder in November 2020 and sentenced by Judge William Bostick in February 2021 to serve 16 years in prison, with credit for 3 years already served. In January 2022 the Alabama Supreme Court rejected an appeal of his conviction. (report)
  2. March 5: Tracy Ward Austin, 68, was found stabbed and beaten to death at his home on the 5800 block of Shelby County Highway 39, near County Highway 69 in Chelsea. Randall Anthony Gargone was arrested and charged with capital murder. He pleaded not guilty by reason of self-defense at trial in February 2024. (report)
  3. April 8: William Pate Walker, 24, was shot to death in a home on the 900 block of Paradise Cove Lane on Lay Lake. Jacob Ryan Davenport was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted of manslaughter in November 2021 and sentenced in February 2022 to serve 17 years in prison, with credit for 3 years already served. (report)
  4. July 22: Jim William Boykin, 39, was found shot to death at his home at the Fox Valley Apartments at 2101 1st Avenue in West Maylene. Investigators determined that he was likely shot in self-defense while accosting a neighbor he had threatened before. No charges have been filed. (report)
  5. July 29: Dwight Williams, 36, was found dead on Selma Road in Montevallo after being struck by a vehicle which left the scene. Brandon Michael Smith was arrested and charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident with injury. (report)
  6. July 30: Sharon Smith, 4, was killed when the car she was riding in was struck by a train at a crossing on Fulton Springs Road in Alabaster. Her mother, Amy Reeves Silver, was arrested and charged with reckless murder, DUI, unlawful possession of marijuana and disregard of a railroad crossing. A grand jury affirmed those charges in February 2019. (report)
  7. September 8: Prince Johnson, 57, was shot to death at Kirksey's Car Wash on 17th Avenue in Calera. Detorious Lamar Kirsey was taken into custody by Calera police pending a grand jury arraignment to determine charges. (report)
  8. October 6: Ronald Darnell "Chief" Jones, 68, died from injuries sustained when he was run over in the driveway of a house on the 500 block of 11th Street in Calera. Tommy Clarence Haynes, a friend of Jones who had been with him at a party there, was found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with manslaughter. (report)
  9. December 2: Darius Lilly, 28, was killed in a head-on collision on Shelby County Highway 25 in Calera. Hunter Graham Spann was charged with reckless murder, first-degree assault, driving under the influence, and improper passing. He pleaded guilty to reckless murder and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. (report)
  10. December 9: Marchael Wayne Vick, 42, was killed in a vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 31 in Alabaster. The other driver, Chase Harris, was determined to have been driving under the influence. He was arrested and charged with reckless murder. He pleaded guilty in June 2020 to reckless manslaughter and DUI.

St Clair County

  1. February 9: Travis Lamar Wilson Jr, 25, serving a 25-year sentence for the 2010 murder of Chris "Ceno" Hoyt in Gadsden, was stabbed to death outside a cell block at the St Clair Correctional Facility east of Springville. Another inmate, Cruz Caldwell, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. (report)
  2. March 14: Steven Ray Kirchner, 61, was found dead at a home on the 5100 block of Beason Cove Road in Steele during a welfare check performed after a Jefferson County detainee discussed a shooting at that location. Princeton Craig Pate was charged with murder. (report)
  3. June 8: Logan D. Lambert, 20, was shot to death along with his girlfriend during an altercation in the parking area of the walking path at the Village at Cook Springs retirement community. Kevin Wayne McCrory, Lambert's father-in-law, was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder. (report)
  4. June 8: Hope Michelle Trapp, 20, was killed in the same encounter.
  5. June 28: Victoria Lyn Deputy, 49, was shot to death and her husband wounded by gunfire at their home on Broken Arrow Drive in Ragland. Bruce E. Bates Jr was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  6. September 20: Rogarius Bray, 33, was stabbed to death during a fight at the St Clair Correctional Facility. Another inmate, Brandy Harris, was charged with the murder. Bray was serving a life sentence for the 2002 murder of William Swain in Birmingham. (report)
  7. October 30: Jennifer Lynn Grap, 39, was found dead along with her husband, Patrick Wayne Grap, 47, in an apparent murder-suicide at their home on the 200 bock of Seddon Farms Lane in Pell City. (report)
  8. November 16: Chester Earl Robinson, 43, was killed along with three young children riding with him when their car was struck on I-20 eastbound near mile marker 158 north of Pell City. The driver of the other vehicle, Justin Wells, believed to have been driving under the influence, was arrested and charged with four counts of murder. (report)

  1. July 25: Casey Nicole Kizer, 17, was shot during a dispute between acquaintances at Fleetwood Metal and taken to the Coosa Valley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Owen Ladon Wallace was arrested in June 2019 and charged with manslaughter. (report)
  2. August 4: Homer Deshawn Calloway, 35, was shot to death at his home in Childersburg. Kev'vakius Jalik Jemison has been charged with capital murder, and turned himself in. (report)
  3. August 30: Melissa Joy McDonald, 34, was pronounced dead at the Coosa Valley Medical Center from gunshot wounds suffered while she was working at the Allen Oil Texaco on Alabama State Highway 21 in Sylacauga. Carlos Laundrell Brooks was arrested in July 2019 and charged with murder. (report)
  4. November 18: Jerry Ray DeLee, 67, was shot to death on the 200 block of South Wetumpka Avenue in Sylacauga. A person of interest was taken into custody at the scene. (report)

  1. January 28: Kandice Cabbil, 20 months old, was found unresponsive in a unit at the Broadmoore Gardens Apartments in Tuscaloosa. The coroner determined that she was the victim of a homicide. Her father, Samuel Cabbil, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  2. February 9: Jalen Merriweather, 18, was shot to death when he attempted to intervene in a violent domestic assault at the Broadmore Gardens Apartments on James I. Harrison Jr Parkway. Donald Kenneth Robertson was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery, and several lesser charges. Three others were charged with hindering prosecution by aiding a fugitive.   3. March 10: Mulove Deshavon Williams, 25, was found shot to death in a grassy area at the Hay Court Apartments public housing community. A person of interest was taken into custody. (report)
  4. March 28: An unnamed 8-week-old boy died at Children's Hospital from injuries suffered at home in Tuscaloosa. After an investigation his mother, Lakendra Yashekia Williams, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  5. April 26: Jacquire Laayette Douglas, 38, was shot to death and his girlfriend seriously injured at their home on the 11000 block of Oak Arbor Way in the Fosters community. The woman's former boyfriend, Randy Britford, was charged with murder and surrendered to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit. (report)
  6. May 25: James Lester Stevenson, 51, was found shot to death in his home at 4133 67th Avenue in Tuscaloosa. Kiara Monique Harton was arrested as a suspect and confessed to shooting him during an argument. She was charged with murder. (report)
  7. June 17: Willie Terrell Snyder, 28, was shot during an argument at the Kaulton Trailer Park on the 2600 block of Old Kaulton Road in Tuscaloosa. The suspected shooter, Shaquile Deanthony Crawford, surrendered to police the next day. (report)
  8. July 15: Christopher Hutt, 42, died from gunshot wounds suffered in a May 26 shooting outside a party on the 2600 block of 25th Street South in Tuscaloosa's West Haven neighborhood. A 5-year-old girl was struck by a stray bullet but survived. Brandon Hurst was arrested and charged with Hutt's murder and with other crimes. (report)
  9. July 28: Sheila Britton, a clerk, died at DCH Regional Hospital from injuries suffered when she attempted to prevent a theft at the Shell Food Mart at 700 Skyland Boulevard five days earlier. Michael Wayne Burrell and Dewan Latrell Hampton were arrested and charged with first degree robbery and murder. Hampton was convicted of manslaughter and 4th degree theft in January 2020 and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Burrell pleaded to the same charges and was given the same sentence in February.   10. August 8: David Bernard Tucker, 29, was found dead in front of a house on the 1000 block of 14th Avenue in Northport following an apparent argument arising from an "illegal transation". Deandre Deshawn Eaton was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  11. December 21: Taderrius Tykell Ryce, 14 months, died at Children's Hospital from head injuries suffered two days earlier at his home on the 400 block of 8th Avenue Northeast in Holt. His cause of death was determined in April 2019 to have been homicide. His mother, Temika Carter, was indicted in June for murder and aggravated child abuse. (report)

Walker County

  1. February 6: An unnamed person was found dead off Park Dunn Road just north of Parrish. No arrest. (report)
  2. May 4: The body of Tony Wayne Duncan was found near Jagger Road, south of Nauvoo. He was last seen on April 28, and his pickup truck was found burned on No. 2 Hill Road a day later. David Earl Davis and Michael Scott Mathews were arrested and initially charged with murder. The charges against Mathews were dismissed after a grand jury declined to indict. Davis was indicted for reckless manslaughter. Investigators later determined that a third suspect, Anthony Glen Hunt Jr, was likely the aggressor, and charged him in November 2020 with murder and abuse of a corpse. Davis was expected to testify against him as part of a plea bargain in which he would serve a 10-year sentence. Hunt pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. (report)
  3. May 10: Jason Freeman, 34, was pronounced dead at Walker Baptist Medical Center. He was shot following an argument with an employee at the Walker County Recycling facility in Sumiton. Charges have not yet been filed. (report)
  4. May 18: Terrell Lynn Sanford, 44, was found dead in the trunk of his car in a field off of No. 2 Hill Road in Nauvoo. A person of interest has been identified, but not yet found for questioning. (report)
  5. July 29: William Earl Ervin, 38, was shot to death at the Dripping Wet Paint Auto & Body Shop at 2005 Commerce Drive in Jasper. A person has been taken into custody for questioning. (report)
  6. September 11: Monica Graves, 31, was found shot to death inside a pickup truck parked on Sharon Boulevard underneath I-22 at Exit 78 south of Dora. John Softley, 70, a part-time investigator for the Jasper Police Department and newly-installed member of the Parrish Town Council was also found dead in his truck from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.   7. October 17: Jamie Marie Kernop, 17, was found shot to death at a home on Earley Street in Sumiton. Two males were also injured by gunshot. Dylan Blair was arrested and charged with murder. A second suspect, Deaster Gardner, remains at large. (report)
