This is a List of homicides in 2019, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 265 homicides were reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and adjudicated through the courts.

Bibb County

  1. March 12: Quinton Ashaad Few, 27, was stabbed to death at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent. Fellow inmate Terence Griffin was charged with his murder. (report)
  2. March 15: Ray Anthony Little, 56, was stabbed to death at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent. Fellow inmate Devarrieo Montez Shepherd was charged with his murder. (report)

Blount County

  1. April 4: Daniel Stockley was found fatally wounded by gunshot in the driveway of a home in Highland Lake. Investigators believe he came to the house drunk to confront his mother and stepfather over a financial dispute. No charges have been filed. (report)
  2. September 3: The remains of Adam Ruben Jason Beard, 35, were found inside a steel canister at a residence at 1276 Paige Springs Road in Blountsville. Haley Ragsdale, Sara Burgess Moore, Ryan Hunter Farr, and Jesus “Jesse” Flores were arrested and charged with capital murder during a robbery. Moore pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. (report)
  3. September 9: Enzo McCormack, 18 months, died at Children's Hospital from trauma. His mother, Samantha McCormack, and her boyfriend, Robert Keith Elmore Jr, were arrested and charged with reckless murder and capital murder, respectively. Elmore was convicted in October 2023 and sentenced by assigned judge Chad Wise to life in prison without parole. (report)
  4. November 24: Delilah McKee and her estranged husband Ricky McKee were both found shot to death at her home on the 1700 block of Long Leaf Trail in Smoke Rise. Ricky McKee had been arrested and charged with 3rd degree domestic violence a few days earlier and ordered held without bond by Judge Steven King. Nevertheless he was released on $2,500 bond. Investigators have not determined the specific circumstances of their deaths. (report)

Calhoun County

  1. April 9: Joseph Solomon Nicholas Haywood, 40, died at Gadsden Regional Medical Center from a gunshot wound received during an altercation at a home on the 4000 block of Gadsden Highway in Piedmont. Jessie James Beecham was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. September 14: Douglas Dewayne Sparks, 40, was shot to death at a home on U.S. Highway 411 North in North Gadsden. He had been hired to repair plumbing at the home. The homeowner, Orva Kyle McDonald Jr, was arrested and charged with murder. He claims to have no recollection of, or motive for, the shooting. (report)
  3. September 15: Antonio Gustavious Taylor, 30, was shot to death in a parking lot on the 1700 block of Springrock Street in Gadsden. A suspect was taken into custody at the scene, but has not been charged. (report)

Chilton County

  1. April 27: Jatwan Oshay Holman, 32, was shot to death during an argument in front of a house on Chilton County Road 807 just outside Maplesville. Leterrius Antoine Liggett was identified as a suspect, but has not yet been arrested or charged. (report)
  2. October 9: Debra Chapman, 60, was killed and her husband critically injured in a shooting at a home near the intersection of Chilton County Road 480 and Chilton County Road 813 east of I-65 near Clanton. The incident apparently occurred during an argument about a dog's death. Dallas Clint Gray was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Coosa County

  1. February 3: André Lamonde Davis, 29, was found shot to death in a car in Goodwater. Leadam Quintez Kelly was arrested in 2023 and charged with capital murder. (report)

Cullman County

  1. August 4: Robert Wilsford Sr, 65, was shot to death by a Hanceville Police officer after he began firing at officers attempting to perform a wellness check at his home on Cullman County Road 599 just outside the Hanceville city limits. The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident. (report)
  2. September 20: Angela McCoy, 49, was found dead in a home she was renting in the Bethel community. He estranged husband, Jason Brent McCoy, was arrested in Alabaster and charged with murder. (report)
  3. October 12: Taylor Garcia, 9, and his younger brother were killed at their home on Cullman County Road 1718 near Baileyton. Their mother, Sara Franco Tapia, was found nearby with self-inflicted injuries. She was charged with three counts of capital murder. (report)
  4. October 12: Alvaro Garcia, 3, died alongside his older brother.
  5. October 21: Retired pyrotechnics innovator Tom DeWille, 76, and another man were killed in a violent family dispute in the Prospect Mountain area. Matthew LeWayne Clayton fled the scene and was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Clayton attempted suicide at the Cullman County Jail and died after being taken to a hospital. (report)
  6. October 21: Rollan Frank Edwards, 75, was killed in the same incident.

Etowah County

  1. January 3: An unnamed male was killed and two other men wounded by gunfire when an argument broke out at Hammett Towing & Recovery on Wesson Lake Road just outside Attalla. The suspected shooter has not been named, but is believed to have been one of those injured. (report)
  2. May 24: Kelvin Bernard Bradford, 49, was found shot to death at a home on the 400 block of Henry Street in Gadsden. No arrest. (report)
  3. October 15: The remains of Johnny Lee Rhodes, last seen on September 7, were recovered in a wooded area off Bristow Cove Road west of Aurora. Three persons of interest were detained for questioning, and one charged with receiving stolen property, but no murder charges have been filed . (report)
  4. October 27: Kalab Blake Whitworth, 18, was shot at a large party at 525 Country Road, just west of Attalla. Whitworth was one of several suspects charged in the 2018 murder of A. J. Huff, and was scheduled to go on trial in January 2020. (report)

Bessemer

  1. February 15: An unnamed male died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound received during a dispute with a woman on the 200 block of 24th Street South. (report)
  2. March 30: Tavarus Jamal Johnson, 26, was found shot to death outside a home on Longbrook Drive. Brothers NyKeil Brown and Quindarrius Antonio Brown were arrested and charged with murder. The Brown brothers were released on bond. They were arrested again in January 2020 as suspects in another shooting at Bessemer's Southside Homes. (report)
  3. May 5: Anthony Hyshaw, 18, was shot to death during an altercation on the corner of 10th Street and Hall Avenue. No arrest.
  4. June 4: Devin Skylar Sandlin, 23, was shot to death on the 1700 block of Long 14th Street. No arrest. A bright red Dodge Charger is believed to have been connected to his death. (report)
  5. July 26: Calvin Walter George Hudson Jr, 20, was pronounced dead at UAB Medical West from gunshot wounds suffered in a shooting on the 200 block of Deadrick Street. Two others were injured. No arrest. (report)
  6. August 27: David Clifton Harper, 77, was found dead in his home on the 1500 block of Dartmouth Avenue. Investigators determined it was a homicide. Stephaughn Jerrod Joseph was arrested and charged with capital murder, theft and burglary. (report)
  7. September 8: Christopher Elliott, 39, died at UAB Hospital from injuries suffered when he was run over by a vehicle on the shoulder of I-20/59 after arguing with another man during a double date. Marcus Dewayne Hall was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  8. September 22: Sammy Stuart Blankenship, 57, an employee of Dunn Construction working on the southbound lanes of I-20/59 near the Splash Adventure Parkway exit, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle that was driven through construction cones. The driver, Daniel J. Hyde, reportedly stopped and looked at the damage to his own vehicle and then left the scene without seeking to help Blankenship. A deputy pursued him from the scene. Hyde was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death, a Class C felony. (report)
  9. October 5: Miko Steadman Marks, 47, was killed in a drive-by shooting on Mary Susan Bryant Bridge on 9th Avenue North. She was a passenger in a car being driven by her son when another car pulled alongside and its occupants opened fire. No arrest. (report)
  10. October 12: Christon Anthony Lewis, 25, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered while he was in a vehicle stopped near the intersection of 28th Street and 11th Avenue. Kalan Phillips was charged with murder. He was arrested on November 15. (report)
  11. November 21: Jekeria Jaquay Osborn, 22, was shot to death while in his car on the Splash Adventure Parkway bridge over I-20/59 in an apparent targeted assault. No arrest. (report)
  12. November 21: Dandre Jamal Paige, 27, Osborn's girlfriend and the mother of his son, was killed in the same incident.
  13. December 9: Courtney Tremaine Hudson, 29, died at UAB Hospital from multiple gunshot wounds suffered while in a car near the intersection of Carolina Avenue and 15th Street South. A suspect, who had been in the same vehicle, was taken into custody at the scene. No charges have been announced. (report)

Brighton

  1. June 20: Santos Valasquez Merida, 27, was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital after being found with gunshot wounds at the Holiday Mobile Home Park in the 4300 block of Bessemer Super Highway. Another male injured by gunfire was found in a crashed car on Jaybird Road. Ruben Rosales Ayala and an unidentified 16 year old were arrested and charged capital murder. (report)
  2. August 1: Ke'Marius D. "Mac" Scott, 15, was shot to death on the 1300 block of Smith Street. Police initially believed the shooting was accidental, but later found cause to arrest and charge Jodie M. Fuller with murder. (report)
  3. December 20: Cadarius Munford, 27, was shot to death on the 1200 block of Water Street, near Brighton City Hall. Vijay Ramure Lipscomb, who had been involved in an ongoing dispute with Munford, was arrested and charged with capital murder. That charge was later reduced to felony murder. Lipscomb died in custody of the Jefferson County Jail in April 2020. He was seen on a video recording inhaling an unknown supstance before he was found unresponsive. (report)

Center Point

  1. January 27: Veronica Gail Foy, 47, died at UAB Hospital after being shot by a male who approached her while she was sitting in her car at the Center Point Gardens apartments on Garden Way and shot her in the side. Her daughter and granddaughter were also in the car. The shooter fled the scene on foot. No arrest. (report)
  2. March 9: Wendell Lee Bonner, 30, was hit by gunshot while driving, and crashed his car on Center Point Parkway near 36th Avenue Northeast. He was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital that afternoon. No arrest. (report)
  3. May 31: Herman Williams, 53, was fatally shot during a dispute over a basketball at the Charter East Apartments on 15th Terrace Northeast. Lashaun Addaryl Netherly was arrested nearby and charged with murder. He was convicted at trial in July 2022 on a lesser charge of provocation manslaughter. (report)
  4. October 13: Benjamin Elio Gonzalez, 21, was found shot to death inside a unit at The Pointe Apartments on the 1800 block of Martinique Drive Northeast. Frank Jamall Steele was arrested and charged with capital murder. He was convicted in Judge Stephen Wallace's court in January 2023 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. (report)
  5. December 7: Kenny Hambright, 56, died from gunshot wounds suffered in the parking lot of the Woodside Condominiums on Shadowood Circle off Center Point Parkway. Cordlin Garrett was arrested and charged with murder. A grand jury elevated the charge to capital murder. (report)
  6. December 13: Kellie Ann Hughes, 31, was found in a wooded area near Medical Park Drive in Huffman as part of an investigation which began with a 911 call that led deputies to the Woodside Condominiums on Shadowood Circle off Center Point Parkway where a woman claimed to have been held captive. Brady Witcher and Brittany McMillan were captured in St Louis, Missouri on December 19. The two are suspected in several other crimes, including a triple homicide in Bethalto, Illinois. (report)

Fairfield

  1. March 15: Jamel Peppins, 26, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered on the 500 block of Seminole Circle. No arrest. (report)
  2. April 3: DeShawn Ferrez Jackson, 20, and another man were found shot to death in a vehicle parked behind a house on the 6600 block of Tensaw Court. Investigators believe the murders were related to the prior murder of Jamel Peppins. (report)
  3. April 3: Tre'Vion Marks, 21, was found dead in the same car.
  4. June 3: Catherine "Mrs Cat" Liddell, 48, was shot to death along with her son at their home on the 200 block of 57th Street. No arrest. (report)
  5. June 3: Tavaris "Varis" Honor, 23, was killed in the same incident.
  6. August 3: Demarcus Jerome Atkinson, 21, was killed in a shooting in a parking lot at the Chateau Glen Oaks apartments off Milstead Road. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating. (report)
  7. October 3: Sidell Alstan Erskine, 35, was stabbed to death during a domestic altercation at a home in the 300 block of 52nd Street. His girlfriend, Jammie LaJoyce Hughes, called 911 to report the incident. She was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. She pleaded not guilty by reason of self defense, but was convicted at trial before Judge David Carpenter in March 2023. Because of her previous burglary convictions, she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. (report)
  8. November 22: An unidentified male was found dead alongside I-20/59 near mile marker 118 after being struck by several vehicles, none of which stopped. Alabama State Troopers are investigating the hit-and-run. (report)

Fultondale

  1. August 14: Dewayne Braxton Hubbert, 60, died at UAB Hospital from injuries sustained in a vehicle collision on I-65 in Fultondale three days earlier. Zorro Vontannyae Sanders of Decatur was suspected of driving under the influence. He was charged with vehicular manslaughter in January 2020. (report)

Gardendale

  1. May 3: Andrew Wade Kimbrel, 42, who was employed as a Vestavia Hills Police officer died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered at his home in the Woodbrook Apartments off of Stouts Road. His wife, Stephanie Nicole Keller, was charged with intentional murder. She was convicted of felony manslaughter in Judge Alaric May's court in October 2021. In January 2022 she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. (report)

Helena

  1. August 20: Beverly Holston Harris, 45, owner of Ericka's Angels day care, was found shot to death after a domestic dispute at a home on the 8400 block of Shoreside Lane in Helena's Timberlake subdivision. Her husband, Naylan Lamar Harris, was taken into custody at the scene. After investigators determined that Mrs Harris was the aggressor, he was released with no charges filed. (report)

Hoover

  1. February 7: Keith Terrell Cooperwood, 29, was shot to death during an altercation at the Nine90 Wisteria Apartments on Wisteria Place. The shooter turned himself in to police. Prosecutors determined that the shooting was justified and declined to pursue criminal charges. (report)
  2. June 26: Zachariah Taylor Music, 20, was shot to death during a robbery staged at a planned drug transaction in the north parking deck of the Riverchase Galleria. Michael Jabari Akamune, Dannarious De Shon Washington, Michael Jaran Brown, and Xavier Marqise Thompson were all charged in his death. Brown pleaded guilty to a charge of felony murder before Judge Alaric May in April 2023, and was given a 20-year split sentence with a minimum of 5 years to serve. Thompson was convicted at trial before Judge May in March 2024. (report)
  3. November 17: Robert Michael Lyons, 55, was found shot to death at his home at The Park at Hoover apartments following an argument with an acquaintance. Austyn Reese McMillian was arrested and charged with murder. He was indicted by a grand jury in November 2020. (report)

Hueytown

  1. June 15: Jamarcus Dejun Moore, 28, was shot to death by a police officer after a chase from Birmingham. Moore had driven away from an attempted traffic stop at Avenue I and 21st Street Ensley, prompting a pursuit on I-20/59 during which shots were said to be fired from the suspect's car. They left the interstate at 19th Street Bessemer and turned down Hueytown Road and and then Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive, coming to a stop after the pursuing police vehicle struck the Toyota Camry. Birmingham police officer Aric Mitchell, who had initiated the stop and caused the collision, fired into the crashed car, killing Moore and seriously wounding passenger Samantha Hardin. Mitchell's actions were reviewed by the department internally and by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, both of which determined that the shooting was in compliance with policy. In 2022 Moore's family joined Hardin in a federal lawsuit against the City of Birmingham alleging excessive force and wrongful death. Judge Abdul Kallon upheld the department's claim of immunity for damages caused by the vehicle collision, but allowed the claims based on the shooting to proceed. In February 2024 a federal jury awarded the plaintiffs $4.5 million in punitive and compensatory damages. The city appealed the verdict.(report)
  2. October 1: Walker Humphryes, 2, died at Children's Hospital after being found unresponsive in a neighbor's swimming pool. His father, Grady Scott Humphryes was indicted on a charge of reckless manslaughter in late 2020. (report)
  3. November 13: Robert Beane, 27, was found dead of a heroin overdose in a car parked outside a residence on the 3900 block of Old Johns Road. Investigators determined that the homeowner, Cecil William Cox, had provided the drugs and witnessed the overdose, but did not seek help for Beane. Cox was charged with distribution of illicit drugs and with murder. (report)

Kimberly

  1. February 6: Ronny Leon Stallings, 60, was shot to death in his home in the Kimberly Estates mobile home park. His son, Ryan Stallings, was arrested and charged with his murder. (report)

Leeds

  1. April 21: Tyler Michael Haws, 2, died at Children's Hospital from injuries sustained four days earlier while he was home on the 8300 block of 1st Avenue. His uncle and legal guardian Jason Daniel Sparks, was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated child abuse. He pleaded guilty in September 2022 to a reduced charge of murder. (report)

Lipscomb

  1. February 6: Fredrick O'Neal Harris, 63, was found wrapped in trash bags on 15th Street just inside the city limits. No arrest. (report)
  2. November 26: Derrico Dayevondre Harris, 23, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered near 13th Street South and Avenue H. No arrest. (report)

Midfield

  1. January 24: David Lee Morgan, 40, was found dead from gunshot wounds at a vacant parking lot at the intersection of Cherry Street and Bessemer Superhighway. Investigators believe he was killed elsewhere and dumped there. No arrest. (report)
  2. February 13: Jimmy Lee Martin, 38, was shot to death in his home on the 1400 block of Collier Drive during an apparent home invasion. No arrest. (report)
  3. October 5: Tomichael M Sha "Kitty" Alexander, 37, was shot to death in front of a home on the 1500 block of Carol Circle after an apparent family dispute. Her uncle, Anthony Johnson, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder. (report)

Mountain Brook

  1. December 1: Megan Louise Montgomery, 31, was found shot to death in the parking lot of the Mountain Brook Athletic Complex on the 3600 block of Bethune Drive. Investigators found evidence that she was killed in a domestic argument which followed an Iron Bowl party at Courtyard 280. Her husband, Jason Bragg McIntosh, surrendered to police and was charged with capital murder. He pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced by Judge Shanta Owens to 30 years in prison. Tarrant

  1. June 1: Lee Crosby Tetter, 57, was found dead in his vehicle on the 700 block of Bell Avenue. Andrew Adams was arrested and charged with capital murder. He was indicted on that charge in November 2019. (report)
  2. August 23: Dai'Jon J. Wynn, 14, was shot to death while sitting in a car at the Exxon gas station at 1135 Pinson Valley Parkway, near Pinson Street. Wynn's death was ruled a homicide, though the gunshot was determined to have been accidental. The shooter was charged with felony illegal possession of a firearm by a minor. (report)
  3. September 28: Joe Loston Sanders, 47, was shot to death during an apparent robbery or dispute over drugs at his home on the 500 block of 4th Street in the Robinwood community. Kenneth Jerome Wilkerson Jr was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. October 27: Steven Wayne Riley, 34, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered while he was in a truck which had collided with another truck on Forest Street, between Wharton and Auburn Avenues. No arrest. (report)

Trussville

  1. March 30: Randy DeWayne Young, 40, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered during an altercation over being blocked into a parking space at the Cracker Barrel at 4710 Norrell Drive near I-59 Exit 141 / North Chalkville Road. Bryan Patrick Hancock was taken into custody at the scene and charged with capital murder. Judge Clyde Jones denied a petition to give Hancock immunity under Stand Your Ground law. Hancock was convicted at trial in July 2021 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. (report)

Warrior

  1. February 25: Barry Jay McDonald, 55, was found shot to death in a wooded area off of Baker Street, near U.S. Highway 31. No arrest. (report)
  2. June 15: Kristy Lynn Pickett, 26, was found shot to death along with her husband on the 3500 block of Bethel Road. Terrence Jermaine Holder, an acquaintance of the couple who had been staying with them, was arrested and charged with both murders. He was convicted of capital murder in Michael Streety's court with a recommended sentence of life in prison without parole. (report)
  3. June 15: Tommy Ervin Shyrie Sr, 58, was killed in the same incident.

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. January 9: Brandi Allen, 39, was killed by her estranged husband, Mark David Allen, 43, who committed suicide. They were both found in a car parked at her home on the 8500 block of Old Bagley Road in the Bagley community. (report)
  2. February 26: Arnulfo Ortega, 39, died at UAB Hospital from wounds suffered when he and another man were shot during a dispute with a co-worker over an automobile transaction at the business where they both worked on the 5900 block of Service Road off of Chalkville Mountain Road, on an unincorporated parcel surrounded by Trussville. Walter Edward Juskiewicz was indicted by a grand jury on charges of capital murder and attempted murder. (report)
  3. April 12: Billy Walker Powell Jr, 46, was found dead in Bayview Lake. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office determined that the cause of death was homicide. No arrest. (report)
  4. April 14: David Wade Reynolds, 54, the Highway Coordinator for the Jefferson County Department of Roads and Transportation, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while he was clearing storm debris from 15th Street Road near Hueytown. Kenneth Logan Eady was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Additional charges are under consideration. (report)
  5. May 26: Linda Cole Jackson, 52, was shot to death at her home on the 4700 block of Longmeadow Drive in the Letson Farms subdivision McCalla. Investigators believe she was killed while attempting to defend another woman from sexual assault. Her husband, Belton Eugene Nettles, was arrested and charged with capital murder. He was later also charged with seven counts of sodomy, one count of attempted rape, and one count of kidnapping. Nettles pleaded guilty to reduced charges of murder, attempted murder, rape and sodomy and was sentenced by Judge David Carpenter to life in prison with the possibility of parole. (report)
  6. August 8: The remains of Shawn David Jackson, 49, missing from Clayton County, Georgia since July 7, were found in a shallow grave off Shady Grove Road near Village Creek west of Mulga. No arrest. (report)
  7. August 22: Michael James Moore, 35, was found dead from gunshot wound at his home on the 5400 block of Nottinghill Drive in Grayson Valley. His wife was also injured in the shooting, which arose from a dispute over suitors for their niece. Kendall Bernard Banks and Zackary Durante Danner were arrested and charged with capital murder and attempted murder. They were indicted on those charges in February 2020. (report)
  8. October 5: Steven Edward Davis, 35, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, died at UAB Hospital from injuries suffered during a fight with corrections officers. Prison officials said that Davis charged out of his cell, "brandishing one prison-made weapon in each hand," before he was subdued. (report)
  9. December 14: Jacoby Keland Johnson, 21, was one of two males found shot to death in a car containing drugs and guns at the Tammera Place Apartments on Chalkville School Road. No arrest. (report)
  10. December 14: Tyler Darcell Robinson, 20, was found dead in the same car.

Lee County

  1. May 19: William Buechner, an Auburn Police Department officer, was shot to death while responding to a reported domestic disturbance at the Arrowhead Park mobile home park off of Wire Road west of Auburn. The suspected shooter, Grady Wayne Wilkes, fled the scene but was captured overnight and charged with capital murder, 3 counts of attempted murder, and 1 count of second degree domestic abuse.   2. May 25: Rod Bramblett and his wife, Paula were both killed when their SUV was rear ended in a turn lane at the intersection of Shug Jordan Parkway and West Samford Avenue in Auburn. After an investigation determined that he had been speeding and had marijuana in his system at the time of the crash, 16-year-old Johnston Edward Taylor was charged with manslaughter. (report)
  3. May 25: Paula Bramblett was killed in the same incident.
  4. June 4: George Eugene Cleere, 57, was struck and killed while riding a motorcycle near the intersection of Wire Road and Cox Road in Auburn. George H. Shearer III was arrested at the scene and charged initially with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. He was later charged with murder. (report)
  5. July 20: Sidney Austin Harmon, 27, was stabbed to death during a fight at the Circle W Bar on Lee County Road 379 in Valley. Phillip Warren Wood was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Shelby County

  1. February 18: Arthur Grey Till Jr, 73, was found dead from blunt force trauma at his home on the 3100 block of Crossings Drive in Hoover's Caldwell Crossings subdivision. Jackson Bradley Young was arrested and charged with murder. He was indicted on that charge by a Shelby County grand jury in January 2020. (report)
  2. February 23: Calvin J. Ray, 19, was found shot to death at his home on the 3700 block of Shelby County Highway 77 near Columbiana. Calvin's brother, Jalen K. Ray, was injured in a confrontation with another family member. Jalen was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  3. April 7: Danielle Michael Hines, 43, was found dead from a gunshot wound at her home on the 3600 block of Timber Oak Circle in Helena. Her husband, Roland Seaburn Hines, was also found dead, from an apparent suicide. (report)
  4. June 15: Deonte Keshawn Puryear, 18, was shot to death in his car parked in a driveway in the Summerchase subdivision of Calera. Jaylin Tevin Washington, who was free on bond from a drug arrest, was charged with manslaughter. (report)
  5. September 6: Johnny Lee Payne, 45, was found shot to death after a domestic violence report at a home in Gibson Road in Columbiana. One person was taken into custody for questioning, but no arrests have been announced. (link)
  6. October 20: Stanley M. Turner II, 17, was found dead inside a vehicle at the Sonesta Extended Stay Suites on Greenhill Parkway off U.S. Highway 280. Jakobi Witherspoon, Aja Kylandrea Brenee Whitt, Jamal Antowain Phillips, Ja'Micah Jayland Jordan and Rodriquez Tyon Allen were arrested and charged with murder and first-degree robbery. All five were indicted on those charges in January 2020. (report)
  7. November 17: Tracy Ford, 42, a Fairfield City Schools official, was found dead at his home at the Brook Highland Place apartments on Meadow Drive off Brook Highland Parkway. His partner, Timothy Ackers, who was also found at the apartment, was the apparent perpetrator of a murder-suicide. (report)
  8. November 25: Marquis Derius Fields, 24, was found shot to death on the 100 block of Nelson Circle in Montevallo. Derious Garner was arrested and charged with reckless murder, attempted murder, and receiving stolen property. (report)
  9. December 30: Brian S. Boots, 32, died from injuries suffered in a head-on collision on Christmas Day on Alabama Highway 261 between Shelby County Highway 105 and Starkey Street in Helena. The driver of the other vehicle, Chad Wayne Hughes, was determined to be traveling in excess of 100 mph on the wrong side of the road while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs. Hughes was arrested in May 2020 and charged with murder, DUI, reckless driving and unlawful possession of marijuana. (report)

  1. February 24: John W. Patterson, 76, was found dead near Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at Police Camp Road and St Clair County Highway 57 north of Riverside. His son, John Shane Patterson, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. February 26: Steven Eric Mullins, 45, an inmate at the St Clair Correctional Facility serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of Billy Jack Gaither, was found stabbed do death in his cell. Christopher Scott Jones, himself serving a 25-year sentence after pleading guilty to his involvement in the Cahaba Lakes murders, was charged with capital murder. (report)
  3. April 19: Demario Jovohyn Sanders, 23, died at UAB Hospital from stab wounds suffered in an assault at the Shadydale Mobile Home Park. Terry Neal Caldwell was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. November 5: Sloan "Boo" Harmon, 20, was found shot to death in a car that had run off the road in Moody. Two suspects, Michael Iervolino and James Dylon Stewart, were captured hours later near Camp Winnataska Road in Pell City. They were initially charged with theft relating to the investigation. Iervolino was charged with capital murder in February 2020. (report)

Talladega County

  1. June 12: Donald Edward Carroll, 41, was struck and killed by a gray Nissan Altima while walking on Alabama State Route 77 in Lincoln. Jessica Lynn Jordan was arrested a week later and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a death. (report)
  2. July 14: An unnamed male was shot to death and two others injured by gunfire during a shootout at the intersection of Fort Williams Street and Broadway Avenue at 2:30 AM. No arrest. (report)
  3. August 13: Javaon Ousley, 19, was shot to death on a basketball court in the Knoxville Homes public housing community in Lincoln. The alleged shooter was an off-duty Lincoln Police officer, who was also wounded by gunfire. No charges have been filed. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. January 2: Warkeisha Renata Caddell, 38, was found dead in her home at 2300 Crabtree Road. Her boyfriend, Korrie Donnell Robinson, turned himself in to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with murder. He told investigators he shot Caddell in self-defense. (report)
  2. March 14: Jarvis Anthony Hudson, 32, was shot to death in an exchange of gunfire on the 1900 block of 29th Avenue in Tuscaloosa. Another man was critically wounded. Milton Prentice, Bryan Groom and Dexter Cunningham II were arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. March 29: Evie Campbell, 16, was killed when the car she was riding in ran off of Bama Rock Garden Road north of Vance and into a tree. The driver, Kerstyn Danielle Nece, was charged with felony manslaughter. (report)
  4. June 9: Elexis Lashelle McCool, 18, was found shot to death in the back seat of an abandoned vehicle on the 3700 block of 25th Street. A 14-year-old suspect was charged with murder. Another 15-year-old was charged with 1st degree theft, abuse of a corpse, and obstructing governmental operations. (report)
  5. June 14: Omari Jones-Pearce, 1, was found dead in a bathtub at the Creekwood Village Apartments on 40th Avenue in Tuscaloosa. His mother's boyfriend, Christopher Cornelius Pearson, was arrested and initially charged with murder. A grand jury indicted him for capital murder in September. (report)
  6. June 27: Cory Tyron Mitchell, 27, was found shot to death at outside a home at 5703 Clearview Street, near Cottondale Elementary School in Cottondale. No arrest. Bernest Brown Jr is sought as a person of interest in the case. (report)
  7. July 5: Zakia Bibbs, 25, was killed in a shootout between two vehicles on I-20/59 eastbound near mile marker 96. A damaged black Nissan Pathfinder is sought in connection to the shooting. A $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction was offered by Governor Kay Ivey's office. (King, 38 report)
  8. July 29: The body of Marka "Willoe" Watkins, 20, who was reported missing in June, was found in a well at an abandoned house at 10517 Will Walker Lane in Vance. Watkins was the daughter of Miranda Michelle Lynch, who was murdered in 2015. Kendal "Tyler" Battles, Joseph Brandon Nevels and Devon Trent Hall were arrested and charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. Battles' wife, Monic Mochell Battles, was also arrested and charged in connection with the murder. Hall pleaded guilty to felony murder in July 2021 and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Battles was convicted at trial in September 2021. The charges against Battles were dismissed in January 2023. (report)
  9. August 4: Shanina Smith, 27, was shot to death by a co-worker at the Lear Corporation auto seat plant in Brookwood. Angela Nichole Mayo left the scene but later turned herself in to police. She was charged with murder. (report)
  10. August 6: Anthony Killings, 24, was killed by a stray bullet in his home at the Parker 301 Apartments on Helen Keller Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. The gunfire originated during a robbery the previous night. Krisshod K'tyse La'Nard Fritz and Demarlio Wayshawn Robertson were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. (report)
  11. September: Brentson Skidmore, 26, died at DCH Regional Medical Center from complications from a blow to the head suffered at the The Filling Station at 411 23rd Avenue. Ryan Gunning was arrested and originally charged with 3rd degree assault, but that charge was upgraded to manslaughter after Skidmore died. (report)
  12. September 16: Quintin Benson, 42, died at DCH Regional Medical Center from gunshot wounds suffered on the 2600 block of 25th Street. No arrest. (report)
  13. September 16: Dornell Cousette, 40, a Tuscaloosa Police officer, was shot to death in an exchange of gunfire while attempting to serve an outstanding warrant at a house near Short 17th Street and 33rd Avenue. The suspect, Luther Bernard Watkins Jr, was also wounded and was taken to the Northport Medical Center and later transferred to UAB Hospital where he was arrested and charged with capital murder.   14. September 18: An unnamed male was shot to death at the Woodlawn Manor Apartments at 3820 1st Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  15. November 3: Rayshard Richey, 36, died at DCH Regional Medical Center from gunshot wounds suffered in a dispute over money several days earlier at Monnish Park in Tuscaloosa. His cousin, Robert Mitchell Williams, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  16. December 6: Michael Archibald, 24, was shot to death during an argument at his home in the West Circle Apartments in the 3500 block of Fifth Street in Northport. His sister, Michelle Renee Scroggins, was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)

Walker County

  1. July 11: Monica Daniele Jackson, 49, was one of four people killed when the Nissan Altima they were riding in was struck head-on in the eastbound lanes of I-22 about a mile south of Jasper. Michael Troy Majors, who was driving the wrong way on the interstate, was charged with mans: laughter. (report)
  2. July 11: Tamblyn J. Jackson, 50, was killed in the same collision.
  3. July 11: Kheri Thomas Ayers, 29, was killed in the same collision.
  4. July 11: Daniel Izell Johnson, 42, was killed in the same collision.
  5. August 5: Austin Aaron, 14, died at Children's Hospital from injuries suffered when a Walker County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle struck the ATV he was driving at Alabama State Highway 69 southbound at Old Tuscaloosa Road in Jasper three days earlier. Deputy Blake Carter Hudson was found to have been driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol. He was dismissed from the force. In 2023 he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in exchange for an 8-year suspended sentence and 5-years probation. As part of the agreement he will not seek re-accreditation as a law enforcement officer.   6. September 3: Brandon King, 38, was shot to death by his father, David Michael King, at a home in Nauvoo. The father shot himself when a deputy arrived, and died from his wounds. (report)
