Mitchell was arrested near his home in Carbon Hill and charged with attempted murder on January 13. Responding deputies said that Mitchell fired a handgun and fled into the woods, where he was later captured. He was held in an isolation cell at the jail. Two weeks later he was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. A statement from the Sheriff's office claimed that Mitchell had been "alert and conscious" when he was taken to the hospital, but that was contradicted by security camera footage that was obtained by the media. According to Mitchell's family, an emergency room doctor found that Mitchell had an unusually low body temperature. Walker County Coroner Joey Vick determined that his cause of death was "homicide caused by medical neglect."
