Malcovery Security
Malcovery Security was a firm that provided customized intelligence reports and strategy consulting to combat cyber-crime, malware, phishing and other network-borne attacks against businesses.
The company was founded by Gary Warner in 2013 based on his experience and research as head of the Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research at UAB. Other co-founders included Joe Barron, Phil Compton, Greg Coticchia, Mike Perez, and Don Scelza. The company's development team operated from Birmingham's Innovation Depot.
Coticchia, an adjunct professor and executive-in-residence for software and information technology at the University of Pittsburgh, licensed the technology from UAB and led its market commercialization as the company's first CEO, heading a the company's management office in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. His contract was terminated in August 2014, and he was succeeded as CEO by G. T. LaBorde, a former executive of MedMined.
In October 2015 Malcovery was acquired by Leesburg, Virginia-based PhishMe, which planned to keep its Birmingham staff at Innovation Depot, and employed Warner as "Chief Threat Scientist". That company was acquired by a private equity firm in 2018 and rebranded as Cofense. Warner left PhishMe to take a similar position with DarkTower, a division of Queen Associates of Charlotte, North Carolina for which he heads a Birmingham-based "intelligence team". Cofense has no presence in Birmingham.
