Michael Tipton was an interior designer who lived and worked in Birmingham. Tipton worked with many designers in the area, including Ellen Simonton. He was known for his sophisticated yet understated formalist style. He was considered an excellent colorist.

He was the subject of artist Melissa Springer's ground-breaking series called "Michael." This photo-essay lasted over a period of time photographing Tipton's struggle with HIV and AIDS. This series of posed and unposed photographs continued to the end of his life due to the disease.
