Midtown district

Birmingham's Midtown district is a loosely-defined district of downtown Birmingham, south of the Railroad Reservation, but north of the Medical Center. Though technically part of Birmingham's Southside, it is usually distinguished as lying to the north of that district.

The Daniel Building and Liberty National Building are prominent long-standing midtown landmarks. Historically midtown was the home of the Birmingham's "Automotive District" with numerous early 20th century car dealerships, service centers and suppliers. Many of those buildings have since been redeveloped.

More recent major redevelopments include Station 121, the multi-block 20 Midtown mixed use development, the major Parkside District centered around Railroad Park and Regions Field, and the Rotary Trail repurposing the 1st Avenue Cut and extending the district toward Lakeview, Pepper Place and Sloss Furnaces.

Other uses

In a broad sense, "midtown" can refer to all of downtown Birmingham's densely-developed commercial districts. In an even broader sense, the term is sometimes used in the commercial real estate market to refer to Birmingham and its inner suburbs, generally within the I-459 corridor, in contrast to exurban commercial areas such as Riverchase and Inverness.

In its 1977 Downtown Birmingham: Architectural and Historical Walking Tour Guide, the Birmingham Historical Society identified "midtown" as the 1880s commercial development along 20th Street North from 3rd Avenue North toward the residential section surrounding Capitol Park.
