Mike O'Berry
Preston Michael O'Berry (born April 20, 1954 in Birmingham) was a Major League catcher for seven seasons with six different clubs and coached the Pelham High School baseball team from 2001 to 2006.
O'Berry grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Ensley High School. He attended the University of South Alabama, and was drafted in the 22nd round of the 1975 amateur player draft by the Boston Red Sox and debuted with the team on April 18, 1979. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs after the season and played as a backup for the Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels, New York Yankees and Montreal Expos over the following years before retiring after the 1985 season. His first year in Cincinnati was his most productive, with appearances in 55 games. Over his career in the Majors, O'Berry had a .191 batting average with 27 runs batted in and 3 home runs.
O'Berry remained in baseball as a minor league and independent team manager from 1992 to 1998, including an Appalachian League championship with the Bluefield Orioles. In 2001 he returned to the Birmingham area to coach the Pelham Panthers. He led the team to an AHSAA Class 6A championship in 2004.
