1976: Bail bondsman and former Klan Grand Dragon James Esdale died.
1934: A robber was killed and his partner wounded in a shootout in the lobby of the Redmont Hotel after being caught in the act by Birmingham Police Department detective A. C. McGuire, who was also struck in the arm by return fire.
