Polly Holliday as "Flo"

Polly Dean Holliday (born July 2, 1937 in Jasper) is an actress best known for her role as Florence Jean "Flo" Castleberry on the television series Alice, and later on her own show, Flo.

Holliday attended the Alabama College for Women at Montevallo in the late 1950s where she already excelled in the theater department, playing the leads in "The Lady's Not for Burning" and "Medea". She went on to Florida State University, and spent the first phase of her career earning respect on the classical stage, including a long run with the Asolo Reportory Company in Sarasota, Florida.

While on the hit television show Alice, she became very popular and coined the catch phrase "Kiss my grits!" She won two Golden Globes and was nominated for an Emmy for her role on the show. After four years on Alice (1976 to 1980), she moved to her own spin-off, set in Texas. The show was not successful and ended in 1981.

Holliday also made appearances on television shows such as The Golden Girls (as Rose's blind sister Lily) and Home Improvement (as Tim's mother-in-law), and in movies such as Gremlins' and Mrs. Doubtfire. In 1989, she was inducted into the Alabama Walk of Fame.

She appeared on Broadway in productions of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1990 (for which she was nominated for a Tony), and a 1986 revival of Arsenic and Old Lace as one of the dotty, homicidal, old aunties. She also starred in the 1994 Broadway production of Picnic.
