Red Mountain (band)
Red Mountain (formerly Red Mountain White Trash) is an old-time string band and contra dance band founded about 1985 by a group of friends and neighbors living on Red Mountain. Members include fiddler Jim Cauthen, guitarist Joyce Cauthen, mandolin player Phil Foster, banjo ukelele and harmonica player Jamie Finley, autoharpist Bill Martin, bassist Nancy Jackson and, sometimes, vocalist Carole Griffin. Fiddler Ed Baggott was formerly a member of the band.
The group regularly plays dances and parties as well as concerts and festivals. The group took its original name from an inside joke, referring to their penchant for playing music instead of fixing up their houses as the Highland Park neighborhood was gentrifying. As their playing took them outside the Birmingham area it became harder to explain the joke and the band's name was shortened to "Red Mountain". In style Red Mountain tends to stay close to home with folk melodies drawn from the mountains of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia and arrangements reminiscent of the Carter Family and other big groups with multiple melody players and a layered rhythm section.
The band's album releases have all been issued under the group's own Whoop It Up Records label.
