Roebuck-South East Lake is one of 23 "Communities" in Birmingham's "Community Participation Program". It includes the neighborhoods of Roebuck, Roebuck Springs-South Roebuck, and South East Lake.

The Roebuck-South East Lake community covers 8.12 square miles (about 5,200 acres) in Northeast Birmingham, adjoining the city limits of Irondale beyond Ruffner Mountain to the southeast. The community also borders the East Lake and Airport Hills communities to the west, and the Huffman community to the north. The community is bisected by I-59.

Demographics

According to the the 2010 census, the Roebuck-South East Lake community had 15,594 residents comprising 5,943 housholds, with an average of 2.54 people per household. 70.7% of residents were African American and 26.0% were white. 6,060 residents of the community were active in the work force, primarily in service industries. 1,892 residents were age 65 or older. Estimated median household income for 2015 was $36,243, or $18,068 per capita. The median net worth of residents was estimated as $45,881.

4,008 (56.9%) of the community's 7,043 homes were owner-occupied, with 27.5% occupied by renters and 15.6% unoccupied. 943 of the owner-occupied homes were owned outright. The median value of owner-occupied homes was estimated as $133,909 for 2015.
