SMART Institute
The Sports Medicine and Athletic Related Trauma Institute or SMART Institute is a program created by orthopedic surgeon Larry Lemak as an affiliate of his National Center for Sports Safety. It aims, through educational programs, research and community outreach, to promote improved physical safety and medical care for athletes at all levels of competition.
SMART debuted as a state-funded program at the University of South Florida in 2005. Shortly after leaving his partnership with James Andrews and moving his Lemak Sports Medicine practice to Brookwood Hospital, Lemak recreated the program for the Birmingham area.
The group's advisory board is made up of Lemak and his son David along with cardiologists, neurologists, chiropractors, primary care physicians, emergency room physicians, oral surgeons and a sports psychologist. In addition to coordinating preventative and emergency medical services, the group produces "Prepare", an educational outreach program aimed at high school, youth, and recreational athletes, trainers and coaches.
