Sam Shatara

Salman Mitri "Fat Sam" Shatara (born c. 1960; died May 18, 2016 at UAB Hospital) was the owner of Fat Sam's Sub Station on 11th Avenue South near UAB.

Shatara moved to Birmingham from San Francisco, California in the late 1980s. He opened his sandwich shop in March 1990 and became a fixture in UAB's nascent campus life.

Shatara was involved in a serious vehicle collision on April 8, 2016. He was treated at UAB Hospital, where he died of organ failure on May 18.

Shatara was survived by his wife, Annette, and two sons, Mitri and Salman II. His funeral services were held at St George Melkite Greek Catholic Church and he was buried at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham.
