Lot 1-A

Lot 1-A is located behind the city-owned deck built for the John A. Hand Building, between 20th and at least 22nd Streets N., and the Railroad Reservation and behind the buildings along Morris Avenue. I have an internal document about the parking deck and it refers to our "overflow" parking lot as "BPA Lot 1-A". Lot 1-B might be the rest of the parking area from the 22nd Street viaduct to 24th Street. There is a fence and a gate that separates the two "lots" from one another at the 22nd St viaduct. I just don't know how to word it to make it make sense in the article. And I am not 100% sure about Lot 1-B. --Wheresdib 10:50, 1 March 2007 (PST)

Morris Avenue (Lot A)

For clarification to the above: Lot A consist of A-1 and A-2 which is located at 2299 Morris Avenue. It spans from 20th Street to 24th Street with both lots combined with a total of 793 spaces. --User:Keiser1962 17:43, 1 August 2007

Deck 9

I'm confused about Deck 9. The address would indicate it's where Southside Station is, but I presume that's different from Deck 9. Could the street number be wrong in the article? Unfortunately, the BPA web site is of no help. --Lkseitz 07:03, 27 June 2012 (PDT)

Answer to Deck 9

Actually the address for Southside Station is 401 19th Street. If you look behind the apartments you will see a parking deck. Untill recently that was Deck #9 for the Birmingham Parking Authority. It has since been taken over by UAB and is Deck #5 under their system. Hope that clears things up. --keiser1962

  • Yes, that clears it up. I'd assumed that the Southside Station deck was privately owned, not part of the BPA system. So, does UAB also own the deck on 18th Street between 4th & 5th Ave. South? --Lkseitz 21:12, 29 June 2012 (PDT)

More than likely it is part of the UAB system. Most of the property on that side of town belongs to them. --keiser1962 13:22, 02 July 2012 (CDT)

1962

  • Lou Isaacson (October 30, 1962) "City Studying Ban on New Parking Lots" The Birmingham News, p. 30 - The Birmingham City Commission wanted to study passing a zoning amendment to prevent building new surface parking lots. Mayor Art Hanes and Commissioner J. T. Waggoner favored more study. Commissioner Bull Connor stated that "Birmingham already looks like a toothless man," and that he, "will not vote for any more parking lots in downtown Birmingham." Hanes complained that merchants "holler about parking, but they don't want to put one dime into any project." The lot in question was the northeast corner of 21st and 2nd, owned by Birmingham Realty and leased by Hendon & Co. which operated parking lots. The buildings on the property were being demolished when the matter came before the Commission. As an inducement, Mark Hodo, chair of the City Federal Savings & Loan, told Waggoner that the lot might someday be converted to multi-level parking deck with a pedestrian bridge over 21st Street connecting to the City Federal Building. In the event, the lot was developed and no multi-story garage was built. --Dystopos (talk) 19:27, 24 February 2021 (PST)
