Conflicting information

I searched for "Blach's" at The Birmingham News archive and came up with conflicting information. (I suggest sorting by oldest first.) First, an October 6, 1995 story ("Blach's slated to get stores, loft apartments") says that the store "closed 15 years ago" (1980). But a March 17, 2002 story ("Old Blach's building could play pivotal role") says the store "last operated" in the downtown location. Although I could be reading too much into the excerpt there. (Regardless, my searches at HighBeam Research make it clear the chain closed in late '87 or early '88.) Does anyone have additional info?

(There's also conflicting information on when what became the Blach's building was built. An August 17, 2005 story ("2 companies seek Jeffco loans to renovate buildings") says 1888, but a September 22, 2007 story ("Space updated with respect for building's history, architectural elements") says 1890. I suspect my downtown walking tour book by Marjorie White could clear this one up, but it's at home and I'm not right now.) --Lkseitz 08:03, 29 February 2008 (PST)

  • Yep, that book says 1890. --Lkseitz 05:07, 1 March 2008 (PST)

The ad in the 1920 Birmingham Central High School Mirror gives the location as "3rd Ave at 19th St.". --Dystopos 18:30, 15 August 2008 (PDT)
