Discrepancies

There are numerous discrepancies to be sorted out:

  • There seems to be a great deal of confusion between this Charles Wheelock and the Colonel who commanded the 97th and died in 1865. Most early sources say that the architect did serve with the 97th (or 9th) in the Civil War and held the rank of Captain, so my assumption is that he lived in the area after marrying Eliza and was somehow related to the Boonville commander who ended the war as a Colonel (though was beveted as Brig. Gen. for some time).
  • Wheelock's middle initial is given variously as W., R. or B.
  • Owen says he was the first Mayor of Emporia, but he actually sat on the Council.
  • Wheelock had an office in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Browne expands that to Las Vegas, NV and New Mexico, which is probably incorrect.
  • Most sources give 1833 as Wheelock's birth date, but one source had him born in 1820.
  • The design of the Molton Hotel is often credited to Charles Wheelock, though it was not constructed until four years after his death. --Dystopos 12:11, 6 December 2010 (PST)
